In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem: Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime. As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans in the Ypres salient.

FIELD MUSEUM PHOTOS JOHN GURCHE ART LOCATION: Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois DATE OF VISIT: May 2000 This mural of the Tyrannosaurus rex named Sue, portrayed in a lifelike scene, was painted by the popular paleoartist John Gurche. This large mural, which measures a good twenty feet across and several feet high, is painted on a large circular section of wall directly overlooking the finished mount of Sue. Directly below the painting is the original skull of Sue, mounted separately on the second floor of the Field Museum, because of its weight was too great to place it on the original skeletal mount. Near the skull are displays featuring several of Sue's teeth, her wishbone, and her vertebrae, plus movies of her excavation, preparation, and mounting. The original sketches for this mural are part of private collector John Lanzendorf's dinosaur art collection. Several pieces from his collection, most of them involving or portraying Tyrannosaurus rex, were exhibited at the Field for several months during the Spring-Summer of 2000. This exhibit ran concurrently with the unveiling of the finished Sue mount. According to Lanzendorf, the original sketches for this Gurche painting, which were a part of the Field Lanzendorf art exhibit, are the only Gurchees residing in a private collection anywhere around the world. The man that Lanzendorf calls the "most famous man in paleoart" usually only paints on commission for large museums and institutions. For example, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History contains a large Gurche mural, showing Triceratops and other dinosaurs. And, in 1989 Gurche produced a series of four stamps for the United States Postal Service. These stamps depicted Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pteranodon, and a Brachiosaurus.

14. John Field The Irish Romantic
A brief biography of john field (17821837), listing his major compositions and giving insights into his career in England and Russia. Works of john field.
http://www.carolinaclassical.com/articles/field.html
by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
Enthusiasts of early Romantic piano music are familiar with the name of John Field (1782-1837). Students of piano literature have likely studied one or more solos by Field. But the richness of the composer's inventiveness and the genuine innovations he made in piano playing and in establishing the independent piano piece as a legitimate solo genre for concert performance have largely and undeservedly been overshadowed by the accomplishments of those who followed him. Many of these later Nineteenth Century composers used Field's compositions as models for their own works, and they built upon his techniques and extended them into the full flowering of Romantic piano music.
A musical harbinger of the Romantic Epoch, John Field was the first important composer in a line of early Romantic pianists that began with him and ended with Frédéric Chopin. Born into a Protestant family in Dublin, Ireland, on July, 26th, 1782, John Field was the eldest son of Robert Field, a violinist who played in Dublin theatres. Field studied first with his father and his grandfather, John Field, a church organist. When he was nine years old, he began a brief period of study with Tommaso Giordani, who sponsored his first public performances in three "Spiritual Concerts" at the Rotunda Assembly Rooms, Rutland Square, in March and April of 1792.
In 1793, the Field family moved to London, either to improve the father's position or to launch the son in a musical career. By August 1793, John Field had entered an apprenticeship in London with Muzio Clementi (the famous Italian composer, pianist, and publisher) for seven years for the sum of 100 guineas. Robert Field joined the orchestra of the Haymarket Theatre. John's first public appearance in England took place at the London Tavern on December 12, 1793, when he played "a Lesson on the new Grand Piano Forte" at a benefit concert under the patronage of the Prince of Wales. He also played a concerto by Dussek at a benefit concert in 1794. Otherwise, Clementi held him back from public performances.

Clementi took him to France, Germany and Russia in order to demonstrate his pianos. After appearing in a number of London concerts and touring widely, he settled in Russia, in1803, where he became a fashionable performer and teacher. Illness brought him to London again in 1831. This visit was followed by a continental tour after which he returned to Moscow where he died in 1837. Field, John (1782 - 1837)
To the Irish pianist and composer John Field has been credited the invention of the Nocturne, a form later adopted and developed by Chopin. Field was born in Dublin in 1782, the son of a violinist, but moved with his family to London in 1793, perhaps taking violin lessons from Haydn's friend Salomon. He became an apprentice of Muzio Clementi, appearing in a series of important London concerts, and later touring widely. After concerts in Russia, he remained in St. Petersburg, where he became a fashionable teacher and performer, moving to Moscow in 1821. Illness brought him, in 1831, to London again, a visit followed by a continental tour and a final return to Moscow, where he died in 1837. Piano Music Although Field wrote seven piano concertos and a series of chamber compositions for piano and strings, his chief claim on posterity lies in his eighteen Nocturnes.

18. Contemporary Jewellery In Silver And Wood
john field, designer and maker of asymmetrical oneoff jewellery in exotic woods, silver and gold.
http://www.jfield.co.uk/home.htm
Exotic Wooden Jewellery For the past twelve years I have made a range of one off pieces of jewellery using exotic woods, silver, gold and various other materials. Often one piece of jewellery will open up to reveal another. I also enjoy making stands to display my jewellery. I like to use a variety of materials for the warmth of their colours and because they allow a more sculptural approach to design. The ideas for my jewellery come from a wide range of sources. These include antique scientific equipment, ethnographic artefacts such as netsuke and scrimshaw and ideas suggested whilst actually in the process of making . Metal jewellery I also work on a range of asymmetrical metal jewellery in partnership with my wife Dawn. The materials used are un-hallmarked silver, brass and various semi-precious stones such as amber, amethyst, garnet, white moonstone and opal triplet. The silver cannot be hallmarked because it has the brass pieces soldered to it. First a grid is imprinted on the silver sheet. Then stencils are arranged in the squares and roller printed. The earrings are cut up using the grid system into set sizes. An opal, garnet, moonstone, amethyst, or piece of amber will be used on one, while the other will have some brass decoration.

John Field
Inasmuch as the year 1914 was the centenary of the nocturne (invented by an Irish composer, John Field), it may be of interest to give a short biography of that remarkable virtuoso, especially as no English memoir is as yet accessible. There are monographs in French, Italian, German and Russian, while the latest memoir is also in German, and was presented as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Leipzig by Heinrich Dessauer in 1911. Let me at once say that all the existing notices of Field - even Dessauer's book and the notice in the new edition of Grove's Dictionary - contain no hint of his early triumphs in his native city of Dublin as a prodigy pianist. Recent research has unearthed much new material which, as here summarized, will prove useful to the future biographer of Field. John Field - the son of Robert Field, of Golden Lane, Dublin - was born on July 26, 1782, and was baptized at St. Werburgh's Church on September 30 of the same year. His father had "conformed" to the Protestant Church, owing to the fierce penal laws against Catholics, and had set up a fashionable academy as professor of the violin. He was also ripieno violin in the orchestra of the Theatre Royal, Crow Street, and was one of the original subscribers to the Charitable Musical Society in 1787.
