FILARMONICA "GEORGE ENESCU" - BUCUREªTI English Version Arhiva Filarmonica din Bucureºti a fost fondatã în 1868 din iniþiativa unui grup de muzicieni, în frunte cu Alexandru Flechtenmacher ºi Eduard Wachmann (dupã alte douã tentative, în 1833 ºi în 1865). Actul de constituire este datat 29 aprilie 1868, când Societatea Filarmonicã Românã a susþinut primul sãu concert, prezentând capodopere din creaþia clasicã ºi romanticã. În luna februarie a anului 1888, a fost inaugurat Ateneul Român , devenit de atunci simbol al culturii naþionale. Primul concert susþinut de Filarmonica din Bucureºti sub aceastã cupolã a avut loc la 5 martie 1889. Din acest an concertele filarmonicii vor avea loc în ambianþa elegantã a sãlii Ateneului, salã care, în perioada interbelicã, a fost împodobitã cu o superbã frescã, în aceeaºi perioadã fiind montatã ºi orga (orgã Walker, construitã din iniþiativa lui George Enescu). "GEORGE ENESCU" PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - BUCHAREST Versiunea româneascã Archives 1868: in a moment of great cultural effervescence following the Union of the Danubian Principalities, the Romanian Philharmonic Society came into being and performed its first concert. The Society was created to cultivate the taste for symphonic music among an ever-growing audience, and structured its programmes, from the very beginning, on the masterpieces of the classical and romantic composers. For more than 125 years, this tradition never failed, keeping apace with the discovery of modern composers, such as: Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinski, Richard Strauss, Bela Bartok or George Enescu, whose genius inspired the whole of Romanian musical life. A major event for our national culture, on March 5th, 1889 , the first symphonic concert of the Bucharest Philharmonic orchestra took place in the magnificent hall of the Romanian Athenaeum. This hall, inaugurated in February 1888, was built in record time due to popular contribution, and was to become a temple of music and the very symbol of Romanian culture and nation, remaining, to this day, the home of our first symphony orchestra, which, since 1955, bears George Enescu's name. The monumental building, designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, enthralls us with its lofty columns and harmonious neo-classical style. Somptuous winding stairs open onto great marble and gold foyers which lead to the marvellous circular concert hall of nearly thousand seats. In the interwar period the hall was enriched with an organ and a marvellous circular painting in fresco. Prodigiously gifted, he became best known in America as a conductor (where he was considered as a successor to Toscanini in New York) and in Europe as one of the greatest violinists of the century. But he was first and foremost a composer; and, tragically, his mature works - works of extraordinary emotional depth and intricate beauty - remain virtually unknown outside Romania. Andrei Turcu George Enescu was said by Pablo Casals to be "the most amazing musician since Mozart," a statement which in many respects was true. He achieved international renown as a composer, violinist, pianist, conductor and teacher and he displayed genius in each of these disciplines. He possessed a phenomenal memory and knew the entire repertoire of classical and romantic music by heart, in addition to many works of the twentieth century, with which one of his generations might well have been thought unsympathetic. Apart from these superlative gifts, Enescu was a man of humility; he was a profound teacher (counting Yehudi Menuhin and Dinu Lipatti amongst his pupils) who impressed every musician who met him. The need to earn money, and the upheavals he experienced in Romania as a result of the two World Wars meant that he was better known as a conductor and violinist during his lifetime. But the enormous expansion of the recorded repertoire on CD means that his stature as Romania's greatest composer can now be more widely appreciated. BEGINNINGS Enescu was born in Moldavia, in north-east Romania. The only surviving child of twelve, he was fiercely protected by his mother, and wasn't allowed to mix with other children. He found an outlet in painting, and then, after he was given a violin at the age of four, in music, which he learned to play by ear. By the time he was five, he'd become proficient enough to impress the director of the Conservatoire in the Moldavian capital of Iasi. Two years later, he'd made sufficient progress to go to the Vienna Conservatoire. PRECOCIOUS CHILDHOOD In Vienna, the seven-year-old Enescu studied violin, piano, chamber music, harmony, counterpoint and musical history, and graduated at the age of twelve with the highest grade in all subjects. He had also began his performing career, at first giving recitals back in Romania during vacations, then in Vienna itself. He moved to Paris in 1895, principally to study composition with Massenet. During his three years at the Conservatoire, Enescu composed many student works, including four "School Symphonies", as he described them. But he also wrote the

Home General Data about Romania Culture On the 19 th of August he is born in Liveni-Varnav (today Geoge Enescu), Botosani county, few kilometers away from the place where Mihai Eminescu was born in 1850. His father, Costache, who had a great memory, learning Latin and French by himself, was playing the violin and sometimes conducted a local choir. He shows very early his extraordinary gifts for music. He learns how to play the violin from a virtuous gipsy. At the age of five takes place his first concert. His father presents him to the professor and composer Eduard Caudella who admits him at the Conservatory from Iasi. Due to his extraordinary talent he was guided to follow his studies at the Conservatory from Wien. Here he studies with great professors as Hellmesberger father and son, Robert Fuchs, and Sigismond Bachrich. In his Viennesse concerts young George Enescu plays Brahms, Sarasate, Vieuxtemps, and Mendelssohn. He discovers also the great operas: Verdi, Mozart, Wagner, Massenet, Donizetti, Gounod... and the operettas of d'Hervé, Sullivan, Johann Strauss, and Delibes. He is granted the silver medal of the Viennesse Conservatory.
