Miss Nancy Wilson
Miss Nancy Wilson, born in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1937, knew from the age of four that she wanted to become a singer. In Chillicothe, and in Columbus, Ohio, where her family moved, she sang in various church choirs. In conjunction with her church influences, Wilson's self-proclaimed greatest influence "Little" Jimmy Scott, Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, Louis Jordan, LaVern Backer, Dinah Washington, Ruth Brown all influence her singing style. Out of the age of Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, and Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Carmen McRae, and Gloria Lynn, Miss Nancy Wilson has come to record 60 albums throughout her career, and has won a Grammy, an Emmy, and many more awards from television, movies, commercials, and education. At 15, she won a local talent contest which won her her own television series, "Skyline Melodies," on a local station. She left college to join Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Band in 1956, which included her first, but rare recording on Dot Records. Nancy Wilson had the chance to sit in with the famous alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderly, who helped her to acquire her first manager, John Levy, who continues to manage Wilson. This help led to the landing of a record deal with

The Duke: The Essential Collection, 1927-1961
(Sony/Legacy)
by Mark Anthony Neal
PopMatters Columnist and Music Critic
I The Duke attempts to put Ellington's musical legacy into some kind of fitting context. Spanning from 1927-1961, The Duke compiles over 60 Ellington recordings from his most formidable years. The Duke is one of many products associated with the celebration of the centennial of Ellington's birth. Given the pervading racism of American society and 20th century cultural criticisms, specifically, Ellington was often denied the broad accolades bestowed upon other American composers and musicians like George Gershwin or Benny Goodman, during his lifetime. As Harold Cruse suggests in The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual While Ellington is clearly one of the most recognizable black artists of the 20th century, he emerged within a society, industry, and critical establishment that was at best condescending and contentious. The racist social science theories of the likes of John Wesley Powell and Lewis Henry Morgan were widely circulated and legitimized within popular culture (ya gotta check out Lee Baker's brilliant From Savage to Negro The Duke The second disc presents the Ellington sound as it is being challenged by the emergence of Be-Bop and Rhythm and Blues. Tracks like the rollicking "Antidisestablishmentarianismist," "Creole Love Call," and "Brown Betty" find Ellington holding on to, if not furthering his vision of the big band. The best testament to Duke's genius was that his popularity did not wane, despite the fact that the big band sound, was for all intents, dead. The jewel of the second disc is the more than seven minute version of "Take the A Train." which features the brilliant vocals of Betty Roche. The song was a reminder that throughout the 20th century, Harlem, remained the Mecca of African-American life. And while other cities clearly influenced what we acknowledge as African-American culture (see Suzanne Smith's

Minnesota Public Radio Such music requires a sense of ease, command and confidence. It's gotta sound both lazy and lively, lived-in and fresh. Alto saxophonist/clarinetist Haining, along with his crack crew...has zero trouble getting the feel of the deal.

116. Duke Ellington Biography
Picture and biography.
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~mcgoni/ella/dukebio.html
Duke Ellington Edward Kennedy Ellington was born in Washington on April 29, 1899 and died seventy-five years later. His achievements are astonishing, in their richness and importance to American and world music. He is said to have composed, wholly or in part, as many as one thousand pieces. He composed dozens of popular songs, including “Sophisticated Lady,” and “In a Sentimental Mood,” and he had his hand in the composition of others, such as “Mood Indigo” and “I’m Beginning to See the Light.” But the fact remains that Ellington would be the major jazz composer if he had never written a popular song. Because with Ellington, it is not merely a single line of melody here or a pretty turn of phrase there that counts, but a constant and consistent flow of distinctive ideas, perfectly realized and carefully thought out. He played piano effectively, even brilliantly, but his main instrument, as has often been said, was his band. He was a masterful orchestrator. The sounds of his band were unique: full-bodied, sumptuous, mysterious, varied in texture and effect. He broke all the rules–perhaps he was merely unconcerned with them–introducing dissonance to an unparalleled degree in jazz. During an illness, Ellington wrote two pieces, “Soda Fountain Rag,” and “What You Gonna Do When the Bed Breaks Down?” He began his music career by playing these pieces at parties. Soon Ellington, though still toying with the idea of becoming a professional artist; he was offered a scholarship at an art school. At school he had met some of the musicians who would be with him in the years to come, including saxophonist Otto Hardwick, and, more importantly, drummer Sonny Greer. In 1922, Ellington and Hardwick and trumpeter Arthur Whetsol followed Sonny Greer to New York City. Unable to make a living, they returned to Washington. A year later, they were back to stay, playing as a band under the leadership of banjo player Elmer Snowden. By February, 1924, Snowden had left the band and Ellington took over. They made some test recordings for Victor in 1923 that were never issued.
