Louis Durey
Louis Durey May 27 July 3 ) was a French composer. Louis Durey was born in Paris the son of a local businessman. It was not until he was nineteen years old that he chose to pursue a musical career after hearing a performance of a Claude Debussy work. As a composer he was primarily self-taught. From the beginning, choral music was of great importance in Durey’s productivity. The first work to gain recognition in the music world was for a piano duet titled Carillons . This effort attracted the interest of Maurice Ravel at a 1918 concert who recommended him to his publisher. Durey communicated with his colleague, Darius Milhaud , and asked him to contribute a piano piece that would bring together the six composers who, in 1920 under the guidance of Erik Satie , were dubbed Les Six . Durey was the oldest member and in the beginning was the moving spirit of the renowned assembly of composers. However much acclaim they received, Durey did not participate in the group’s 1921 collaborative work Les Mari©s de la Tour Eiffel , a decision which was a source of great irritation to Jean Cocteau . But Durey did not like Cocteau very much and his withdrawal from the Mari©s project signaled the end of Les Six as a group.

Durey: Chansons basques Op 23
'Les Six' was the appellation given to a group of young French composers circa 1920 who briefly worked together as a counter-offensive to the excesses and giganticism of 'late-Romantics' typified by such composers as Mahler and Schoenberg. But the movement didn't last long and each of the 'six' soon went his (or in one case her) own way. The most familiar names of the six today are Poulenc, Honegger, Milhaud and Auric. Also, to some extent, Germaine Tailleferre. The least remembered member of the group is undoubtedly Louis Durey, who died as recently as 1979. Like Britain's Rutland Boughton and Alan Bush, his career was seriously hampered because of his well-publicised political beliefs. He was a communist, even setting to music some of the writings of Ho Chi Minh. Durey's turn in our French Song Edition has now come, and this disc assembles a programme of his virtually unknown songs including settings of Apollinaire's Bestiaire, the only composer to set all thirty of them. Recorded at Champs Hill, West Sussex, on 11 12 13 November 2000

Arthur Honegger (1892-1955) A major early modern influence on French music, Honegger was one of Les Six's founding members. Ironically, Honegger was probably the most "Germanically" influenced of the members of the group, in stated contrast to the original aesthetic ideal as set by Cocteau. He also devoted more time to "serious study" than most of his contemporaries. In time, Honegger rejected Satie, and strove after high seriousness in a way alien to the rest of the group. While most members primarily produced short, jewel-like pieces, Honegger was the symphonist, having completed five symphonies and several other large scale orchestral compositions.

UNSUNG SONGS
Le Bestiaire, by Louis Durey (1888-1979)
Le Bestiaire (A Bestiary) is a title most of us associate with the charming group of six songs written by the youthful Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) on the poems of Apollinaire. It is a particularly useful set of songs for teaching, being a relatively simple introduction to Poulenc's engaging manner and requiring only a modest vocal gamut. But there is another setting of these poems that is equally useful and interesting and, moreover, complete. This one written by Louis Durey, arguably the least well known of the Les Six group. When the two composers discovered they were actively setting the same poems they were delighted by the coincidence, and Poulenc reacted by dedicating his settings to Durey. The poetry that attracted the composers was a collection of enchanting quatrains the brilliant Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) had createdin the manner of a medieval bestiaryfor a joint project with the artist Raoul Dufy. It was a fascinating venture: Dufy made a large woodcut to match each poem and the whole was published in 1911, in lavish, art-book format. The result was a financial failure but an artistic delight. The Metropolitan Museum of Art published a superb reproduction of this in 1977, and any time taken locating a copy is well spent.
