Felix Draeseke Listening to Felix Draeseke's 3rd Symphony, called the "Symphonia tragica", it is no wonder that Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) considered Draeseke (1835-1913) besides Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) as his main rival when it came to composing symphonic or sacred works. Although Draeseke never got so famous like his two colleagues, there's no need not to respect his work in the same way as we do with the works of Brahms or Bruckner. But this doesn't mean Draeseke got no attention at all. Conductors like Hans von Bülow, Arthur Nikisch, Fritz Reiner, Hans Pfitzner or Karl Böhm all knew about the qualities of Draeseke's works. But the revolutionary developments in classical music which took place at the beginning of the 20th century were one reason that Draeseke's compositions were not played often. Maybe his style was too conservative. An exception were the two successful performances of the oratorio tetralogy "Christus". One was performed in Berlin in 1912, the other in Dresden in the same year. Both were conducted by Bruno Kittel. The oratorio "Christus" is Draeseke's longest work. It describes the life of Jesus Christ and is a very powerful work which takes five hours. No wonder that it took Draeseke five years (from 1896 to 1901) to compose such a gigantic work. May 2004 Dubbed a "giant" by Franz Liszt, Felix Draeseke was one of the leading composers of the new-German school. Early in the Twentieth Century, the music of Felix Draeseke was performed and held in high regard by leading artists including Arthur Nikisch, Edwin Fischer, Hans Pfitzner, Fritz Reiner and Karl Böhm. By the middle of the century, changes in fashion and political climates allowed his name and music to slip into obscurity. But as the 20th century ended, new recordings spurred a renewed interest in his music. The Internationale Draeseke Gesellschaft (IDG) and International Draeseke Society/ North America (IDS/NA) have established the Felix Draeseke Pages to promote and explore the works of this remarkable composer. Chronology 1863-76 On 7 October, Felix August Bernhard Draeseke is born in Coburg to Theodor Draeseke and his wife Maria (born Hanstein).  Eight days later, Draeseke's mother, Maria, dies of a stroke.   The baptism (Lutheran) of Felix Draeseke takes place on 25 November.   On 1 March, Theodor Draeseke marries Emilie Bähring and she becomes stepmother to Felix.   Young Felix is taken on his first trip away from Coburg, to Meiningen and the following year the family brings Draeseke on an extended trip to Leipzig, Dresden and Potsdam. Felix makes the acquaintance of his grandfather, the theologian Bernhard Draeseke, and several aunts. Draeseke composes his first piece of music, a "Kleiner Marsch" (Little March) - now lost - for his father's birthday.   After living half of the year in the Coburg suburb of Rodach, the Draeseke family returns to Coburg and Felix finishes his elementary schooling.

Sein brillantes Klavierkonzert (1886) und das Konzert für Violine (1881) sind vergessen." [Reclams Konzertführer, 15.Auflage 1994, S.924] Hört man Draesekes Musik, mag einem eine solch knappe Einordnung allerdings nicht mehr genügen, so ging es jedenfalls mir. Hinzu kommt das Unverständnis darüber, weshalb die meisten Werke Draesekes vergessen wurden. Doch beginnen wir im Jahre 1835, in dem Felix August Bernhard Draeseke am 7.Oktober in Coburg geboren wurde. Coburg: Der Schlossplatz um 1900 Draeseke lernte sowohl Wagner als auch Liszt persönlich kennen. Liszt symphonische Dichtungen hatten auf ihn einen ebenso tiefen Einfluß wie Wagners Musik. Rein menschlich gesehen stand ihm aber Wagner näher, dem er eine größere Nähe zum Volk zuschrieb. Diese Nähe zu Wagner war es aber auch, die dazu beitrug, daß Draesekes Musik bis heute so sehr vernachlässigt wird. Denn ebenso wie Wagners wurde auch Draesekes Musik von den Nationalsozialisten für ihre Zwecke benutzt. Die Nähe zum Volk, die Dramatik, die mitreißenden Gesten, all dies eignete sich nur zu gut, um Draeseke als einen „germanischen" Komponisten hinzustellen. Und so kam es auch, daß Draesekes Biographie in zwei Bänden im Dritten Reich mit dem Titel „Der Lebens- und Leidensweg eines deutschen Meisters" (von Erich Roeder) herauskam.
