Frederick Delius was born in Bradford, England in 1862, to German parents. Julius Delius, a successful wool merchant who had moved from Bielfeld to Bradford with his wife Elise, named his fourth child (of fourteen) Fritz Theodore Albert. Julius sent his son to business school to prepare to join the family wool business while also providing violin lessons. Fritz showed a marked preference for music but he and a friend persuaded the elder Delius to give them financial backing for a Florida orange grove. The two young men settled at Solano Grove near Jacksonville, where Delius met organist Thomas F. Ward with whom he studied music while absorbing the songs of the local black population.

    Visiting Danville:
Reflections on Delius in Danville and the Upcoming Festival
    (Revised)
    by Michael R. Ridderbusch
My Visit to Danville, September, 1996
Finally! I arrive in Danville, Virginia late Saturday, the last day of summer. The weather is perfect: sunny, slightly breezy, with a hint of autumn in the air. (The Blue Ridge Mountains and Lovers' Leap on Route 58 East were an auspicious first entrance to southern Virginia.) So what brought me all the way from Morgantown, West Virginia to Danville? As a northwesterner transplanted by a job move, why did I come all this distance to a region of the county so different from my background and experience? I'm tracking the path of that great, but lesser known "British" composer Frederick Delius (1862-1934), who spent nine months in Danville (Sept. 1885 - June 1886) teaching music to earn fare to Europe, where he pursued a career as a composer. (Earlier, he had made an unsuccessful attempt to grow oranges in Florida from March 1884 to Sept. 1885, an enterprise designed to assuage the fears, yet escape the scrutiny of his father in England, who wished to hem in the wayward, artistically inclined lad: a classic biographical episode in the lives of artists.) Delius and his music now have an international reputation and have become a minor classic. One can't go into almost any record store with a classical music section of moderate size and not find Delius CD's. He's quite well represented by recordings, several versions existing of his most important works. And it's my love of that music and my desire to see some of its origins that inspired me to come here.

    Frederick Delius and Carl Schuricht
A few lines back I wrote the name of Delius. A British subject but of German origin, Delius had been intended by his parents for a commercial career. At the age of twenty he was working an orange plantation in Florida. It was there that he began to study music on his own, and then he left America to settle in Europe. I heard his Seadrift , based on the poem by Walt Whitman, performed at a festival held in Essen in I906 with the composer present. As I listened to this music, which is so undeservedly sneered at nowadays, I forgot orchestra, singers and audience and lost myself in a dream from which I only awoke the next morning I went to see Delius. He was a charming man, natural, sensitive and good-hearted.
, he said to me: "I have eight sisters..."
As for me, I declared to him,
"I haven't got an orchestra yet, but as soon as I have the first work I'll play is your Seadrift!
And I kept my promise, at Frankfurt, though I slightly rearranged the orchestration which I considered imperfect. Delius was in the audience again that evening.
    He embraced me and said
