Active in a variety of media, including operatic, symphonic, choral, chamber, dance, theater, and improvised musics, Davis has focused upon the integration of improvised and notated expressive resources. His work embodies an intercultural approach, drawing not only upon traditional and current African-American sources, but upon the Javanese gamelan, American Minimalism, and the European and Euro-American avant-garde. His fourth and most recent opera, AMISTAD, based on the slave ship uprising of 1839 and the subsequent trial, premiered at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in November of 1997, with libretto by Thulani Davis and direction by New York Public Theater artistic director George C. Wolfe. His first and best-known opera, X: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOM X, with libretto by Thulani Davis, premiered at the New York City Opera in 1986. Describe him, and what he is encountering? A: [Anthony Johnson] comes to Virginia. He finds a society that is just developing. He's getting in on the ground floor, as it were. I don't know if he was able to immediately envision that there would be opportunities for him here that weren't available elsewhere. I don't know that anyone could have foretold that. Johnson's story becomes, though, something of an exception in that he demonstrates first, that slavery is not lifetime tenure, it's indefinite tenure. The key is not that you're going to be slave from the day you born until the day you die. Because after all, slavery is a status, it's not inherent in any individual. It's relationship with others and a relationship recognized by the society. And the key to it is that it's indefinite. You are a slave until someone who has authority over you declares you no longer to be a slave in the eyes of the practicing society and in the eyes of the law. So Johnson works his way to the opportunity to become his own person, as it were to leave behind him that status of slave. And then he goes on to do what he sees his neighbors doing; he seeks to get his own piece of ground, his own piece of land to cultivate some foodstuffs, to cultivate some foodstuffs that he can sell to others, not only to consume but to enter into the economy, to barter, to argue with his neighbors about the encroachment on his lands and encroachment on his rights. To argue about his contract rights. What he demonstrates is an early fluidity that exists. And what that reflects is that there is vast opportunity and a relatively small population to take advantage of that opportunity. So that people aren't confining everybody immediately to a niche. The areas are rather broad and they allow movement in and out.

As a Fulbright Scholar, he studied with Goffredo Petrassi at the Accademia Nationale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. After working for more than a decade in Europe, Singleton returned to the United States to become Composer-in-Residence with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (1985-88). He subsequently served as Resident Composer at Spelman College in Atlanta (1988-91), as UNISYS Composer-in-Residence with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra(1996-97), and was the 2002-03 Composer-in-Residence with the Ritz Chamber Players of Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, he served as Visiting Professor of Composition at the Yale University School of Music. He has been awarded a 2003 Guggenheim Fellowship, the Kranischsteiner Musikpreis by the City of Darmstadt, Germany, twice the Musikprotokoll Kompositionpreis by the Austrian Radio, the Mayor's Fellowship in the Arts Award by the City of Atlanta, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Important international festivals have also programmed Singleton's music. They include Chamber Music Northwest, Tanglewood, Aspen, Bravo!
