He was the son of one of the few surviving officers of Napoleon's Grand Army which had marched into Russia in 1812 campaign with high hopes. He stayed in Russia and married a lady of the Lithuanian aristocracy, and taught French in Vilna.
In 1851 he was enrolled in the Engineering School in St. Petersburg and then in the Academy of Military Engineering. He taught there as a professor, writing several text books on field fortification. After graduation, he became an expert on military fortification and took part in the Russo-Turkish war of 1877 - 1878 as an army engineer.
In 1878 he joined the Academy as a professor and wrote several books on field fortification. But he never gave up his love for music, and started to compose for the piano as early as 1850.
Being a member of the "Mightly Handful", he wrote numerous articles on music, criticising not only Wagner, Strauss, Reger, but also Tchaikovsky. He adored Chopin and could never accept the "modernism" that emerged in Russian music during 1900 to 1911, though towards the end of his life he sympathetically edited Moussorgsky's opera "Sorochnitskaya Yarmarka" (Sorochnitsky Fair").

Cesar Antonovich Cui 1835 - 1918 C esar Antonovich Cui was the least known of the Big Five. Cesar's father was in Napoleon's army, and was named after the famous Roman figure Julius Caesar. His father became a teacher and eventually a Russian citizen. Cesar learned music from a variety of local sources including his sister and a local violinist. He first went to St. Petersburg in his adolescence to study at a military engineering school. I t was in St. Petersburg that he met up with the rest of the Big Five and Balakirev. He graduated and became a professor in fortifications, but continued his interest in music composing under Balakirev's wing. Cesar Cui was one of the most vocal members of the "new Russian school". He was a vocal and unrestrained critic of music and operas. This cartoon shows a response to his criticism of the first production of "Boris Godunov". The caption reads, "Hail, Cesar Cui, we who are about to die salute you." This is a play on the gladiators at the ancient Roman games saluting Caesar or another emperor.

Weitere folgten, u. a.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF CESAR CUI
[The following fairly light-hearted look at Cui's life and work was written originally in response to a listserv request off the top of my head a couple of years ago. A more formal, factually accurate and up-to-date document may supplant this later. For instance, there is now an English translation of Cui's book on Russian art song. lkn 4-15-95; latest slight revision 4-17-96] Cesar Antonovich Cui has the dubious honor of being the least known (and, therefore, the least as far as history is concerned) of the "Moguchaya Kuchka" ["mighty heap"], that circle of composers begun in the mid 1850's in St. Petersburg and headed by Balakirev (as musical leader) and Stasov (as propagandist, the "sixth" member of the "five", as it were). If you can't remember who the "five" were, they were Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Musorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov "babocumuri" in mnemonic terms (or "babocumurist", to add Stasov, but that sounds like a practitioner of an obscure tribal form of worship). Cui's father, Antoine (the family name at one time used to be spelled "Queuille"), settled in Vilnius, Lithuania after arriving as part of Napoleon's invading army. He married a local named Julia Gucewicz, with whom he had five children. The sons were named after great military men (Cesar, Alexander, Napoleon; the other son was named Boleslav was that a famous military man? Their daughter was Marianna).

Cesar Antonovich Cui
Cesar Antonovich Cui, b. Jan. 18 (N.S.), 1835, d. Mar. 24 (N.S.), 1918, was a Russian composer and critic of French descent best known as a member of the famous group of Russian composers called The FIVE. Cui was trained as a military engineer, but after meeting Balakirev he became a propagandist for the new nationalist school of Russian composers. Despite his nationalist sentiments, Cui's ten operas show as much French character as they do Russian. They include William Ratcliff (1869), Angelo (1876), and The Captive in the Caucasus (1883). Cui, who also composed many orchestral and chamber works, was, however, more important as a critic than a composer. Bibliography:

Cui's father, Antoine, came to Russia with the invading army of Napoleon, and settled in Lithuania where he met Julia Gucewicz. Cesar had three brothers and one sister. He was not a child prodigy, but his father made him take violin lessons, where he learned theory but not composition. Around the age of 15 Cesar went to military engineering school in Petersburg. In Petersburg he met the rest of the members of the " Mighty Five " or kutchka (the group of Russian Nationalist Composers), and began composing music. Cui also became one of the main spokesmen for the "new Russian School," by publishing reviews and views regularly. Many of his articles criticized "modernist" composers like Claude Debussy , and Richard Strauss . Cui was not the greatest composer, and is in fact the least known of the "
