Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park California State Parks, Santa Cruz County Getting there From Highway 17 in Santa Cruz County, exit Mt. Hermon Road. Drive northwest on Mt. Hermon Road through Scotts Valley to the end of the road in Felton (about 3.5 miles). Turn right onto Graham Hill Road, get into the left lane, and turn left onto Highway 9. Drive about 0.5 mile south on Highway 9, then turn left into the signed park entrance road. Drive about 0.5 mile to the entrance kiosk, then continue straight 0.1 mile to the main parking lot, at the end of the road. Details $5 entrance fee. $2 for a park map. Lots of parking in a paved lot. Some free parking on the side of Highway 9 near the park entrance but it's about 0.5 mile from there to the trailhead. Drinking water and restrooms at the edge of the parking lot. There are designated handicapped parking spots, and Redwood Grove Loop Trail is wheelchair accessible. Metro bus #31 stops at the campground entrance, and #35 services Felton, but no bus stops at the park entrance. Restaurants, stores, and gas in Felton. Rules The park has a complicated set of rules, but following them is easy, since they're posted on the map and on trail signs throughout the park. Some trails (fire roads) are multi-use, others are open to hikers and equestrians, and a few are hiking only. Dogs are permitted on leash only, on three trails (Pipeline Road, Meadow Trail, and Graham Hill Trail). For day use, the park is open during daylight hours only (generally dawn to dusk).

But Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park offers easier accessibility to a wider range of eco-climates, trail conditions and types of usage. This is a park for everyone. It’s easy to get to. Located less than a mile south of Felton on Highway 9, the park is about half an hour away. And there is no mountain driving on curvy, narrow roads. You may see some friends, too. Mountain neighbor Pat Rapp is a gatekeeper at the entry kiosk. And one of my favorite environmental activists, Carol Carson, is a docent. You can do as much or as little as you want. Close to the parking lot is the Redwood Grove Loop Trail. Wheelchair and stroller accessible, this 8/10 of a mile trail is flat, shaded and cool. Displaying the park’s oldest and tallest trees, it is the perfect trail to show out-of-state guests, small children or other reluctant walkers. A large meadow and wooded sites along the San Lorenzo River serve picnickers and large groups. Short trails connect these areas with the gift store, redwood grove and nature center. You can also walk across the parking area to the Roaring Camp Railroad station where you can board a train for a trip through the redwoods. The park has a nature center and bookstore. Adjoining the park is Roaring Camp Railroad, offering visitors a chance to journey back in time on an old steam locomotive. The main park area, containing the large, old-growth redwoods, is about 1,750 acres, and the northern area (Fall Creek) is 2,390 acres, with about 20 miles of hiking trails. The tallest tree in the park is about 285 feet tall and about 16 feet wide. The oldest trees in the park are about 1400 to 1800 years old.

Carl Ruggles Carl Ruggles in Winona Carl Ruggles Bibliography Carl Ruggles Music Carl Ruggles in Winona Winona, MN, is a small community on the Mississippi River in the Southeast corner of Minnesota. It is located on the great river and sits between two sets of imposing bluffs which average 600 feet in height. It was (and is) a wealthy little community and it is easy to see how Ruggles was attracted to it. Shortly after Ruggles began as a student at Harvard, he decided music was more important than education and in January, 1907, moved to Winona, Minnesota. He was hired to teach violin there at a music school which had only a catalog as its main asset. He is credited with having founded a Y.M.C.A. orchestra which evolved into the Winona Symphony which has functioned almost continuously since that time. Just previous to his move to the Midwest, he met Charlotte Snell, a well-known singer, and was moved by her flawless performance at a recital in New York. She subsequently followed him to Winona and they were married on April 27, 1908. In that same year she appeared as a soloist with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. Charlotte became a very important influence in Ruggles's life and it was she who suggested the poetic titles to many of his works. It was also during these Winona years that Ruggles came under the influence of a violinist from Minneapolis-St. Paul named Christian Timner. He credits Timner with teaching him a great deal about orchestras and conducting.
