He founded (1927) New Music Edition, a quarterly publishing music by contemporary American and European composers. In 1931, with the help of Leon Theremin (see electronic music ), he invented the rhythmicon, a device that produces various rhythms and cross-rhythms mechanically, for which he wrote a concerto (1932). An interest in counterpoint produced the five Hymns and Fuguing Tunes American Composers on American Music (1933). He also wrote on numerous musical subjects and was an influential teacher whose many students included John Cage , George Gershwin , and Alan Hovhaness . In the late 1950s he and his ethnomusicologist wife traveled throughout the Middle East, India, and Japan collecting musical materials, which he later incorporated into compositions. Komponisten Henry Cowell Biographie Photo Gallery Home Page Die Biographie von Henry Cowell Amerikanischer Komponist; vielleicht wurde Cowell deshalb, weil er als Kind nur wenig musikalische Unterweisung gehabt hatte, ein so origineller Komponist. Mit sechzehn begann er mit Clustern (Tontrauben) zu experimentieren, die auf dem Klavier mit der Faust oder dem Unterarm angeschlagen wurden. Offenbar befriedigte ihn dies nicht recht und so begann er, die Klaviersaiten zu zupfen wie eine Harfe. Von 1923 bis 1933 veranstaltete er fünf Europa-Tourneen, wobei er die Europäer in seine Techniken einführte. Bartok soll sich beifällig geäußert haben; aber das Publikum wurde oft sehr ungehalten. Sogar zu Hause stieß er auf Feindseligkeit. Cowell ließ sich in seinen Experimenten nicht beirren und setzte sich so allmählich durch. Ähnlich wie bei Ives war sein Stil deftig und eklektisch, in dem er irische Volksmusik, französischen Impressionismus sowie orientalische Skalen und Rhythmen zu integrieren suchte. Er schrieb neunzehn Symphonien und ein Klavierkonzert, in welchem er seine perfekte Anwendungsweise von Tontrauben demonstriert.
