Arcangelo Corelli
Italian composer and violinist. Corelli was the fifth child born to a prosperous family of landowners; his initial musical study was probably with the local clergy, then in nearby Lugo and Faenza, and finally in Bologna, where he went in 1666. His studies there were with Giovanni Benvenuti and Leonardo Brugnoli, the former representing the disciplined style of the Accademia filarmonica (to which Corelli was admitted in 1670), the latter a virtuoso violinist. By 1675 (and perhaps as early as 1671) Corelli was in Rome; he may have studied composition under Matteo Simonelli, from whom he would have absorbed the styles of Roman polyphony inherited from Palestrina . A trip to France has been postulated during these years, as has a visit to Spain, but neither has been securely documented. In 1675 he is listed as one of the subordinate violinists ("Arcangelo bolognese") in Roman payment documents; by 1679 he had begun to lead Roman orchestras. In 1680 he may have visited Germany; the later dedications of his op. 5 (to Electress Sophie Charlotte of Brandenburg) and op. 6 (to the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm) support the idea of direct connections between die composer and German courts. From 1681 until his death he was in Rome, making only a few trips (one to Naples in 1702 to play in

Corelli, Arcangelo (1653 - 1713)
The work of the Italian violinist-composer Arcangelo Corelli exercised incalculable influence over the following generation of composers, not least over Handel, who worked briefly with him in Rome in 1707. Corelli was born at Fusignano in 1653 and studied in Bologna, an important musical centre. His later career was chiefly in Rome, where he served the exiled Catholic Queen Christina of Sweden, Cardinal Pamphili and the young Cardinal Ottoboni, in whose palace he lived for a number of years. He died in January 1713 and was buried in the Pantheon, a sign of the respect in which he was held. Instrumental Music Corelli's influence depended largely on his published instrumental music, notably 48 Trio Sonatas for two violins and basso continuo (generally harpsichord and cello), twelve sonatas for violin and continuo and twelve Concerti grossi, works for string orchestra with a solo group of two violins, cello and harpsichord. The Violin Sonatas include a particularly well known set of variations on the popular dance-tune La Follia, a melody used by many composers of the period. Concerto grosso No. 8 is the famous Christmas Concerto, which includes a pastoral movement setting the scene for Christmas, to be played on the night before the festival. Recommended Recordings Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 Nos. 1-6

Arcangelo Corelli 1653-1713
Corelli was appointed violinist at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1713. In 1685 (the year of Bach's birth) Corelli became director of violins, a position that he held for the next twenty-four years. It is reported that in 1672 Corelli visited Paris but soon left because of Lully's jealousy. After 1699 Corelli worked for the Elector of Bavaria where he taught the young violin virtuoso Pisendel . Writing almost exclusively for the violin or string ensemble (primarily trio sonatas or sonatas for the violin), Corelli's works represent a critical link in the evolution of the baroque concerto grosso and sonata forms. Bach's instrumental style was clearly influenced by them, as was that of Corelli's other students Geminiani Locatelli , and Handel (who met Corelli when he visited Italy between 1706-1710).

Corelli, Arcangelo (1653-1713) Arcangelo Corelli, born in 1653 in Fusignano, an Italian village between Ravenna and Bologna, was one of the seventeenth century's most widely admired composers and performers. His music has lasting appeal largely due to its refined sense of poise, the balance of all the forces within each composition, and its modern tonality. Some works are regarded as models of perfection, and Corelli himself has been called "a modern Orpheus." Corelli's music is rigidly formal and simple, but nevertheless original. It achieves magnificent effects with a surprising economy of means. Corelli used intriguing sequential progressions and descending bass figurations that are typical of operatic laments. He helped achieve a new independent status for chamber works such as the Trio Sonatas that were formerly regarded as merely decorative.

BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS. arcangelo corelli. The Italian composer and violinist arcangelo corelli exercised a wide influence
http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxcorelli.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Arcangelo Corelli The Italian composer and violinist Arcangelo Corelli exercised a wide influence on his contemporaries and on the succeeding generation of composers. Born in Fusignano, Italy, in 1653, a full generation before Bach or Handel, he studied in Bologna, a distinguished musical center, then established himself in Rome in the 1670s. By 1679 had entered the service of Queen Christina of Sweden, who had taken up residence in Rome in 1655, after her abdication the year before, and had established there an academy of literati that later became the Arcadian Academy. Thanks to his musical achievements and growing international reputation he found no trouble in obtaining the support of a succession of influential patrons. History has remembered him with such titles as "Founder of Modern Violin Technique," the "World's First Great Violinist," and the "Father of the Concerto Grosso." His contributions can be divided three ways, as violinist, composer, and teacher. It was his skill on the new instrument known as the violin and his extensive and very popular concert tours throughout Europe which did most to give that instrument its prominent place in music. It is probably correct to say that Corelli's popularity as a violinist was as great in his time as was Paganini's during the 19th century. Yet Corelli was not a virtuoso in the contemporary sense, for a beautiful singing tone alone distinguished great violinists in that day, and Corelli's tone quality was the most remarkable in all Europe according to reports. In addition, Corelli was the first person to organize the basic elements of violin technique.
