Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland was born in Brooklyn, New York November 1900. Of Russian Jewish descent, he spent his childhood living above his parents' Brooklyn shop. His music education included time with Rubin Goldmark, also one of George Gershwin 's teachers, and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris from 1921. His first significant work was the necromantic ballet Grohg which contributed thematic material to his later Dance Symphony. Other major works of his first (austere) period include the Short Symphony - 1933 and Music for Theater - 1925. Copland's second period (vernacular) began around 1936 with Billy The Kid and El Salon Mexico . Perhaps Copland's most famous work, Fanfare for the Common Man for brass and percussion was written in 1942 at the request of the conductor Eugene Goosens. The fanfare was also used as one of the main themes in the third movement of Copland's Third Symphony . Aaron Copland died in 1990 at his home in Peekshill, New York. Aaron Copland (1900-1990) - defining the American sound:
Aaron Copland is a classical composer of enormous standing. His style was deceptively simple from a casual acquaintance yet with a hidden richness and depth. His expansive melodic sweep and novel rhythmic drive was put to excellent use on the ballet music for "Appalachian Spring", "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid". It is perhaps in part the American setting of these ballets that led to his music becoming associated with things American, and in turn influencing many other composers in the field. Copland was also an experimentalist, incorporating a number of idioms including Jazz in his music. He produced a number of film scores which exemplify his unique style and experimental characteristics to varying degrees. Films by Aaron Copland:

    http://www.balletmet.org/Notes/Copland.html
Return to BalletNotes Home Page Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990), composer Copland's parents came to the United States from villages in Polish and Lithuanian Russia. His father's name was Anglicized from Kaplan to Copland during his time in England en route to the United States. The family owned a store in Brooklyn and prospered. Aaron was their fifth child, born on November 14, 1990, seven years after his nearest sister. After learning what he could of the piano at home, young Aaron enrolled himself in study with Leopold Wolfsohn, with whom he remained three years, before advancing to study with Victor Wittgenstein and Clarence Adler. Beginning in 1917 he began studying harmony, counterpoint and sonata form under Rubin Goldmark , a devotee of Beethoven and Wagner. At age 20 he had saved enough money to go to France and study at the new American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, near Paris. He was lucky enough to be the first American pupil of Nadia Boulanger, whom he found "exhilarating," and stayed with her until 1924. During these years, not only was he exposed to the tremendous cultural riches of Paris but he also traveled to England, Belgium and Italy. In addition he spent the summers, on Boulanger's advice, in Berlin, Vienna and Salzburg. A 1921 performance he gave of his piano composition

    http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~mcgoni/copland.html
    Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland was born on November 14, 1900 in New York City. His musical works ranged from ballet and orchestral music to choral music and movie scores. For more than four decades Copland was considered the premier American composer. His music from the ballets "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" has inspired the instantly recognisable 'American Landscape' sound of movies, T.V. and radio. Copland learned to play piano from an older sister. By the time he was fifteen he had decided to become a composer. His first tentative steps included a correspondence course in writing harmony. In 1921 Copland traveled to Paris to attend the newly founded music school for Americans at Fontainebleau. He was the first American student of the brilliant teacher, Nadia Boulanger. After three years in Paris he returned to New York with his first major commission, writing an organ concerto for the American appearances of Madame Boulanger. His "Symphony for Organ and Orchestra" premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1925. Copland's growth as a composer mirrored important trends of his time. After his return from Paris he worked with jazz rhythms in his "Piano Concerto" (1926). His "Piano Variations" (1930) was strongly influenced by Igor Stravinsky's Neoclassicism. In 1936 he changed his orientation toward a simpler style. He felt this made his music more meaningful to the large music-loving audience being created by radio and the movies. His most important works during this period were based on American folk lore including "Billy the Kid" (1938) and "Rodeo" (1942). Other works during this period were a series of movie scores including "Of Mice and Men" (1938) and "The Heiress" (1948). In his later years Copland's work reflected the serial techniques of the so-called 12-tone school of Arnold Schoenberg. Notable among these was "Connotations" (1962) commissioned for the opening of Lincoln Center.
