Aaron Copland
Nace en Brooklyn (Nueva York, EE.UU.) el 14 de noviembre de Sus padres eran de ascendencia polaca y lituana, llegando a EE.UU. como emigrantes a finales del siglo XIX. Sus primeros estudios musicales los realiza en el ambiente familiar, bajo la supervisión de Leopold Wolfsohn . Posteriormente estudia con V. Wittgenstein C. Adler y Robin Goldmark . En continua sus estudios en París con Nadia Boulanger (composición y armonía) y Ricardo Viñes (piano), a la vez que entra en contacto con la vida musical parisina a través de Sergei Prokofiev y Darius Milhaud . Live Music for Dance Program
Helps New York City dance companies meet the costs of using live music, performed by New York City-based ensembles or musicians, for their New York City performances. Companies may also request fees for composers who are creating new music for dance projects.

The Program's Objective The Program's objective is to support organizations whose performances encourage and improve public knowledge and appreciation of serious contemporary American music. Eligibility Funds are available for General Operating Support or Project Support to professional performing ensembles with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American music and with plans to continue that commitment. Applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Non-profit tax-exempt status. Performance history of at least two years at the time of application. At least 20% of the ensemble's programming (in terms of duration) for the preceding 2 seasons consists of contemporary American music. Demonstrated commitment to contemporary American music.
It is advised that organizations whose primary mission does not include the performance of new American music apply only for Project Support. Individuals, student ensembles, festivals and presenters without a core ensemble are not eligible. Grants will not be made for the purpose of commissioning composers. Funding Provisions In general, grants range from $1,000 to $20,000. Grant amounts for larger performing organizations with a demonstrated extraordinary commitment to contemporary American music may exceed these amounts at the discretion of the panel. Please note that the awarding of a grant in one year does not imply continuation of that support in subsequent years.

Copland, Aaron [k O u nd] Pronunciation Key Copland, Aaron , American composer, b. Brooklyn, N.Y. Copland was a pupil of Rubin Goldmark and of Nadia Boulanger, who introduced his work to the United States when she conducted his Symphony for Organ and Orchestra in 1925. Although his earliest works show European influences, the American character of the greater part of his compositions is evident in his use of jazz and of American folk tunes, as in the short piece for chamber orchestra, John Henry (1940). Copland's many ballets include Billy the Kid Rodeo (1942), and Appalachian Spring (1944). He composed music for the films Of Mice and Men Our Town The Red Pony (1948), and The Heiress (1949). His major orchestral works are El Salon Mexico (1936) and the Third Symphony (1946). Copland wrote a song cycle, 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson, and a quartet for piano and strings (both 1950), Canticle of Freedom for chorus and orchestra (1955), and a tone poem Inscape What to Listen for in Music (1939, rev. ed. 1957), Copland on Music (1960), and

His early works, such as his piano concerto (1926), were in the jazz style but he gradually developed a gentler style with a regional flavour drawn from American folk music. Among his works are the ballet scores Billy the Kid Rodeo (1942), and Appalachian Spring Inscape Born in New York, Copland studied in France with Nadia Boulanger, and taught from 1940 at the Berkshire Music Center, now the Tanglewood Music Center, near Lenox, Massachusetts. He took avant-garde European styles and gave them a distinctive American feel. His eight film scores, including The Heiress (1949), set new standards for Hollywood.

b Brooklyn, NY, 1900; d Music for the Theater Short Symphony (1932-3). At the same time, concerned with widening gap between public and contemporary composers, wrote some works in a more accessible, popular style. Visited Mexico several times in the 1930s and in 1936 prod. his highly successful , orch. fantasy on popular Mexican tunes. Other works in this style incl. ballets Billy the Kid Rodeo (1942), and Appalachian Spring (1944). In later years Copland prod. little mus., preferring to conduct. Copland always worked hard on the promotional side of Amer. mus. as lecturer and teacher (head of the comp. faculty at Berkshire Mus. Center 1940-65). He toured the world as cond. and ambassador for his country's mus.; co-founded (with Sessions) a series of NY concerts of new Amer. works 1928-31, founded a publishing press, and was active with the League of Composers. In 1937 he founded the Amer. Composers' Alliance. He received Pulitzer Prize for Mus. 1944, Gold Medal of Amer. Acad. 1956, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom 1964. He wrote several books.
