Eric Coates Composer Eric Coates was a gentle and quietly spoken man but his music crackled with enthusiasm and vitality. He could write tunes and clothe them in the most attractive musical colours . . . Someone once said that the marches of Sousa would make a man with a wooden leg step out; a man would have to have a wooden heart not to respond to the music of Eric Coates.' Sir Charles Groves B orn in 1886, Eric Coates was the youngest son of five children. His father was a local doctor whose home and surgery were on Tenter Hill, Hucknall. As a child Eric would lay awake at night listening to the Hucknall Old Brass Band practising in the nearby Plough and Harrow Inn , and when he was six he became the proud owner of a violin. His mother was a fine pianist, his father played the flute, and they formed an orchestra that included Eric and his three sisters. By the age of ten, Eric was first violin and within two years was writing in a part for any player who unexpectedly turned up for orchestral rehearsal, no matter what the instrument was - violin, double-bass, cello or woodwind. When not practising his music, young Eric would chase rats around the stable with his father's bulldogs. Always smartly dressed with a scarf around his neck to protect his chest, he was described by everyone as a gentleman.

Coates (1886-1957), a British gentleman through and through, was a gentle, soft-spoken man who wouldn't compose music until properly dressed including tie and Harris Tweed coat. As a violist in Sir Thomas Beecham's first orchestra, later principal in Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Orchestra, he gained much experience in orchestral sound. His works include more than 160 ballad songs, numerous waltzes and marches (although he said the waltzes were not intended for dancing, the marches not for marching), orchestral suites and fantasies, plus many other short pieces. There are a number of fine performances already on CD. Ever since its issue in 1986 I've treasured EMI's Classics for Pleasure 2-CD set (CFPD 4456) with various orchestras mostly conducted by Sir Charles Groves who was a close friend of the composer; this mid-priced set is still listed in the catalog and well worth owning. ASV has several Coates disks the most valuable of which contains the ballet suite The Jester at the Wedding and the delightful Four Centuries Suite , played by the "East of England Orchestra" conducted by Malcolm Nabarro (WHL 2075); this is the only CD I know of that contains these two major works.

Coates, Eric (1886 - 1957)
Eric Coates was to become the greatest British composer of light music in the 20th century, though his education never looked to be leading him in that direction. He was born in the midlands of England, in the county of Nottinghamshire, in 1886. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, taking viola with the legendary Lionel Tertis, and composition with Frederick Corder. But it was as a violist that he earned his living, joining the famous Queen's Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood. From 1913 to 1919 he was principal viola, and a list of first British performances by that orchestra would indicate that he came into contact with all the most avant garde music of his day. Yet it was to be in the field of light music that he was to become famous. It was the time of the radio, the BBC Light Programme with its demands for new music, and the need to brighten the country after the First World War, and above all it was the day of the 'bright young thing'. It was the perfect scene for a composer who could produce a seemingly endless stream of easily memorable melodies. A publishing house commissioned him to write a major light music work for orchestra each year, while they were happy to take anything from him including his large output of songs. Orchestras demanded that he conduct his own music with them, and he started a second career as a conductor of light music including many appearances with the BBC Theatre Orchestra. His music spoke to all generations, from those looking for nostalgia, to the very young, with his phantasies, 'Cinderella' and 'The Three Bears'. He produced one major success after another, his music in the war years valuable to the morale of the nation, and included the stirring march for the Eighth Army to mark their Alamein victory in 1942 under General Montgomery.

Music Webmaster Len Mullenger ERIC COATES: Thoughts on and Recollections of his Music This short article is not a considered study of Eric Coates or his music. Those who desire such are referred to Geoffrey Self, In Town Tonight (Thames, 1986), the definitive work on Coates and his own autobiography Suite in Four Movements , reprinted, also by Thames, a few years ago. But in 109 (so far) Garlands, plus other articles for the BMS on British light music figures, I have not mentioned Coates except in passing and perhaps it is time I did. Coates (1886-1957) has been described as the King of British Light Music and indeed, unlike Hubert Bath, Haydn Wood and Montague Phillips, not to mention Sullivan and German, he did not aspire to compose symphonic music. There were however areas of light music which he did not touch. He composed virtually nothing for the theatre. His ballets The Enchanted Garden and The Jester at the Wedding were never staged and should be reckoned, as perhaps they were always intended to be, as concert works; an earlier ballet, Seven Dwarfs , enjoyed little success. Unlike so many British light music giants - Sullivan, German, Haydn Wood, bath, Alfred Reynolds and so on - he completed no operettas or musical comedies. He came to films late in life with the title march for

The Dam Busters is one of the classics of British cinema, and I can happily report that it still holds up as a great film today. For anyone who doesn't know, the film recounts in dramatised documentary form an accurate account of a real life action by the RAF in 1943. There are a few liberties taken with the events, but they are minor, certainly compared to the wholesale historical contortions which regularly pour from Hollywood. The story is simple. There are three dams which contain water vital to the German armament industry - 100 tons of water being required to manufacture one ton of steel. The location, construction and defences around the dams make them indestructible by conventional attack, until Dr Barnes Wallis hits upon the idea of a "bouncing bomb" which, dropped at the right height and speed above the reservoirs behind the dams will skip like a stone, sink at the base of the dam and explode in a way which will cause an irresistible shockwave.
