Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis was born on September 10 (22), 1875, at Varena, a small town in the picturesque region of South Lithuania called Dzukija. His father, an organist, later moved to Druskininkai, a spa on the Nemunas. In his childhood he learnt music at home, later studied at the Duke M.Oginski's school of music in Plunge, then at the Warsaw and Leipzig Conservatoires. A formed composer, Ciurlionis took up art studies and attended the Warsaw School of Arts. He was among those who initiated the first Lithuanian art exhibitions in Vilnius (from 1907 on). Later he lived in St.Petersburg, where he mixed closely with the group of Russian painters known as the World of Art and participated in exhibitions. Strenous work, the life in need undermined his health, and on March 28 (April 10), 1911, Ciurlionis died at the age of 36. The heritage of Ciurlionis includes about 300 paintings and a pack of musical compositions. This huge, highly original wealth of art is an invaluable contribution to the treasury of Lithuanian culture. Both in painting and music, Ciurlionis is rightly regarded as a pioneer and initiator of new manifestations, herald of new horizons. He towers in the Lithuanian art as a bright, lofty summit, opening up wonderful vistas. Uncomprehended and unappreciated by contemporaries, the creation of Ciurlionis has aroused wide public interest and respect in our days and carefully protected by the state. The heritage of Ciurlionis is an object of interest for people of various nations. The fame of the great Lithuanian artist is spreading in the world, his works becoming a revelation to thousands which enriches people spiritually, moves and fascinates them.

MIKALOJUS KONSTANTINAS CIURLIONIS NATIONAL COMMEMORATION OF MIKALOJUS KONSTANTINAS CIURLIONIS In 2000, Lithuania celebrated the 125th anniversary of the birth of famous Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875-1911), with a variety of cultural events and functions held in Lithuania, several countries in Europe, and in the USA, under the aegis of the State Cultural Programme for the Year of Ciurlionis. M.K.Ciurlionis is deemed the founder of Lithuanian national music, and his paintings the most significant Lithuanian contribution to European culture thus far. Considered among the vanguard of European symbolism, Ciurlionis was an artist of luminous imagination in both painting and music. His musical compositions developed in style from late romanticism in his early works (two symphonic poems, a string quartet, folk song arrangements, piano pieces, etc.) to highly individualistic, though inconsistent exploration in his later pieces. From ca. 1905 he presented new ways of building cyclic compositions (piano variations, preludes on one theme), and experiments with extended chromatic tonality, artificial modes, polymodality and polytonality. In commemorating the 125th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, the Lithuanian American Fine Arts Association in Chicago, in conjunction with the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, Lithuanian Composers' Union, and Vilnius String Quartet, organized a competition for composers in memoriam M.K.Ciurlionis. This competition sought to formulate a novel approach to Ciurlionis' works, one which would serve as an incentive to re-evaluate them not only in terms of a Lithuanian cultural legacy, but also as a vivid force promoting new creative energies.

Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis: A Life Alfred Erich Senn Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis, known in his family as "Kastukas", was born on September 22 (new style), 1875, in Var na, Lithuania, in what was then the Kaunas province of the Russian Empire. His father, Konstantinas iurlionis, was a church organist; in his time the organ had been almost the only instrument with which one could hope to become a professional musician and, in any case, he had been fascinated by the organ's capacity to 'sing' in several voices at the same time. iurlionis mother, Adel Radmanait , had met his father when she, a Calvinist, had visited a Catholic church and had been struck by both the sound of the organ and the appearance of the organist. In 1878 the family moved to Druskininkai, a resort town in the Gardinas province. iurlionis' parents Life was difficult for the family. iurlionis was the first of ten children born to the couple; nine survived into adulthood. Soon after their arrival in Druskininkai, his father succumbed to wanderlust and disappeared; he apparently went off to Siberia. His mother had to fend for herself for about a year, and when her husband returned, she rejoined him, though hesitantly. Despite this inauspicious beginning, the family held together and grew ever closer with the years. To supplement the salary of ten rubles per month he received as a church organist, his father copied official documents for local people - he knew Russian well and had excellent handwriting - while his mother sewed and gave private lessons.

The grandeur of the u niverse and its astonishing harmony deeply interested him. He attempted to understand cosmogonic problems from the popularly and poetically written works of C. Flammarion and from the hypotheses of Kant and Laplace. While studying at the Warsaw Conservatory he composed the cantata De profundis (for choir and symphony orchestra), two sonatas, variations for string quartet, choral and instrumental fugues, and many short pieces for piano. When he graduated from the Conservatory, he was offered the position of director of the Lublin School of Music, but declined and earned a living by giving private lessons. In 1901 he completed the symphonic poem In the Forest, which won first prize in the competition organised by Zamoyski.

Soviet art historian Lionginas Sepetis Candidate of Science (Art), takes a look at the creative genius of this outstanding artist. Lithuanian composer and artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875-1911) lived a short but fruitful life. In just 35 years he composed more than 200 musical pieces and painted about 200 canvases, of which not one was sold during his lifetime. Practically all of his known paintings, graphic works and originals of his musical opuses have been collected and put on display at the Ciurlionis Museum, built in 1967, in Kaunas, Lithuania. The works of Ciurlionis pose the complex question of whether and to what extent the power of the creative imagination helps the artist perceive and transform reality into artistic images. Ciurlionis' imagination turned polyphony and rhythm into visual symbols. The French writer Remain Rolland called the phenomenon "a completely new continent" and the artist its "Christopher Columbus."
