Frédéric Chopin, the greatest of the Polish composers, was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw on February 22, 1810 of a French father, and a Polish mother. He spent the first 20 years of his life in Warsaw, where he was able to hear many of the premier artists of the time perform. Chopin first studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory, and became very proficient on the instrument by the time he reached his early teens. He played his first concert at the age of 7, and was a published composer by the time he turned 15. By the late 1820s, Chopin had won a great reputation as a piano virtuoso and composer. He toured throughout Europe to the acclaim of audiences and critics, alike. In 1831, after performing in Paris, he fell so deeply in love with the city that he made it his home, and never again returned to Warsaw. He soon became a favorite of the Parisian salons, and the society elite, and throughout the years that he lived in Paris, was always in great demand as both a pianist and a teacher. Vorurteile seien hier besser nicht wiederholt, um sie nicht wieder unversehens zu festigen – ganz wird sich der Verdacht eines „Salon“-Komponisten, was auch immer das sein soll, nie ausrotten lassen. Das umfangreiche Werk des in Warschau geborenen Komponisten, der mit 21 Jahren nach Paris ging und dort mit 39 Jahren starb, spricht eine andere Sprache. Man sollte sich angesichts der stilistischen Weite von Chopins Œuvre nicht auf eine Sichtweise festlegen; doch eine gewisse Experimentalität, die bis zur Avantgarde reichen kann, ist doch stets spürbar. Auf dem Klavier konnte er, selbst ein brillanter Virtuose, neue Wege beschreiten, konzipierte Form, Harmonik und Geschehen in der Musik unabhängig von der Tradition. Vorbereitet schon bei 0’22, hat diese weitgespannte und wehmütige Melodie wohl besondere Bedeutung: sie spielt auf das Kopfmotiv des zweiten Konzertes f-Moll an, das eher entstanden war und mit dem Chopin in Polen die ersten großen Erfolge gehabt hatte. Das melodisch emporstrebende und nach und nach wieder zurücksinkende Seitenthema (ab 1’39) hellt den Satz auf und beruhigt ihn. Dass der weiträumig vorbereitete Einsatz des Klaviers bei 3’48 das risoluto-Thema mehr und mehr auflöst und sehr schnell (bei 4’13) zu der wehmütigen Melodie findet, unterstreicht deren zentrale Bedeutung. Der breit aussingende und reich, wie Belcantogesang eines schönen, aber instrumentalen Soprans verzierte Gestus (etwa bei 5’00) bestimmt das Konzert, auch wenn es immer wieder (etwa bei 5’43) zu energischen Ausbrüchen kommt. Doch Chopin verzichtet sogar auf den wirkungsvollen Auftritt einer Solo-Kadenz und integriert Virtuosität in den Satz: am ehesten als lyrische (s. 6’38!).

His father a French émigré and his mother a lady-in-waiting to a Polish countess, Frederic Chopin grew up in a cultured household outside of Warsaw. Chopin expressed an interest in the piano at an early age and took lessons from Josef Elsner and Wojciech Zywny. At the age of 16, he entered the newly established Warsaw Conservatory. Graduating after three years, Chopin began to make name for himself performing concerts in Vienna and Warsaw. Even with such early success, he decided to leave Poland for Paris in 1831 due to the country’s political instability and his own musical ambition. The move turned out to be a fruitful one as Paris was the center of Romantic pianism during the 1830s, and Chopin quickly became one the movement’s leading figures. Introductions by talented friends such as Liszt, Schumann, and Pleyel allowed Chopin easy entrance into the elite Parisian salons, a key venue for artists of the time. There, he quickly became a sought after teacher and performer of great renown, known for his sensitive, artistic playing and skilled improvisations. Chopin developed numerous artistic connections and friendships through these private concerts and ran in Paris’ highest cultural circles. His friendships and associations included such diverse and talented individuals as writers Victor Hugo and Alexander Dumas, poet Heinrich Heine, and painter Eugene Delacroix.
