AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEN YI Is there a noticeable difference in the number of women composers in China before and after 1949? In other words, does it appear that the dramatic and fundamental change in the government of China in 1949 made a difference in the opportunities for Chinese women to become composers? Yes, without a doubt, the political change created more opportunities for women. For one thing, the number of composition students has increased. Also, in the work place, as in other areas of life in China, both women and men are equal. These changes have made it more possible for women to become composers. How, if at all, did this political reality affect your decision to prepare yourself for a career in composition at the Central Conservatory and when did you make that decision? The door of opportunity opened for those of my generation when the system of higher education in China resumed after the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977) ended. In 1978, I was in the first group of composition students to be admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Actually, I was also admitted as a violin major, though I was only allowed to elect one major. I chose composition because it had been my dream. And since making that decision, I have taken composition seriously as my profession, though I must admit that it is still a mysterious realm for me to explore. Regarding that first group, I understand from an article published in the New York Times earlier this year that, when the Central Conservatory reopened its doors in 1977, "after the 10 barren years of the Cultural Revolution," it received applications from 18,000 musicians across China seeking to pursue professional music studies, and that, of those, only 200 were eventually accepted as the first group of conservatory students. Ms. Chen began violin and piano studies with Zheng Ri-hua and Li Su-xin at age three, but the Cultural Revolution interrupted her musical progress in 1966. She later studied composition with Wu Zu-qiang at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing from 1978-86, where she earned her MA, as the first Chinese woman to receive this degree in music. She then studied composition with Chou Wen-chung and Mario Davidovsky at Columbia University from 1986-93 and there earned her DMA with distinction. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Lawrence University in 2002. Among her many honors in China are First Prize in a national competition in China (1985, for Duo Ye ), First Prize in the composition competition of a children's piano competition in Beijing (1985, for Yu Diao ) and First Prize in a traditional music competition of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing (1986, for Xie Zi ). News: February 2001 Chen Yi Wins $225,000 Ives Prize Chen Yi photo by Jim Hair Chen Yi , a prolific composer who was born in China and became an American citizen last year, was recently named the second winner of the Charles Ives Living , a $225,000 prize awarded every three years by the American Academy of Arts and Letters The Ives Living, which is the largest prize available exclusively to composers, was established in 1998, and is paid in three annual installments of $75,000. Its first winner was Martin Bresnick The prize carries a single condition: that its recipient give up any employment outside composition for the three-year term. Winners may, however, accept commissions for works during that time. Ms. Chen is the Lorena Searcy Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor of Music Composition at the University of Missouri at Kansas City . Her award term begins in July. Currently, at UMKC, Ms. Chen shares the education of 45 composition majors with two other professors. Along with other faculty members, she also performs in new music concerts at the school. During the next three years, Chen will continue advising dissertation projects and giving some lectures, but will cut back on her other teaching. She will return to full time teaching in July 2004.
