http://www.jules-massenet.com/a_pic40.htm
[the teacher] [life [Alfred Bruneau [Mary Garden] Gustave Charpentier Gustave Charpentier's fame - (1860-1956)- mostly rests on "Louise", musical novel "à la Zola", staging a girl of low condition working as needle-woman, fond of a young artist of Montmartre. The girl's parents, simple workers, oppose their relationship and Louise ends up "abducted" by her lover. Both find refuge among the Noctambulists fauna of Montmartre, they merge into the popular rejoicings full of "dizziness" and "drunkenness" until Louise's mother appears, breaking off the magic dream.... To claim for free love was somewhat daring at that time, ( "each soul has a right to its freedom ! Each heart in duty's bound to love !" ) and "Louise" must have been regarded as a revolutionary opera. Beyond its realistic aspect, this opera remains a totally poetic and magic work.
