Hij begon als organist van de San Zipolo, werd vervolgens gecontracteerd als zanger en later als organist van de San Marco. Uiteindelijk werd hij Monteverdi’s opvolger als maestro di capella. In zijn vroege werken is nog duidelijk de invloed van de maestro Monteverdi te horen, maar in zijn latere oeuvre is er een ontwikkeling te herkennen naar wat later de typische stijl van de barokopera zou worden. Cavalli was uiteindelijk niet echt vernieuwend, maar zijn stijl was ook niet meer vergelijkbaar met werk uit de vroege barokperiode. With the decline of the castrati, from the late 18th century to the late 20th century, these roles were sung almost exclusively by female sopranos, mezzo-sopranos (most male soprano roles correspond more closely with the tessitura and range of the female lyric mezzo-soprano than of the female soprano), and contraltos. Since the late 20th century, however, they have been increasingly reclaimed by today's counterpart of the castrato, the countertenor or haute-contre. Who "should" sing these roles? Im gleichen Jahr schloß er an der TU Berlin seinen Magister mit einer Arbeit über Editionsprobleme dieser Oper ab. Nach seinem Wehrdienst beim Jägerbataillon 581 "Berlin" promovierte er in Heidelberg bei Silke Leopold. Seine Dissertation "Die Figur des Odysseus in der venezianischen Oper des 17. Jahrhunderts" (veröffentlicht unter dem Titel "Odysseus in Venedig. Sujetwahl und Rollenkonzeption in der venezianischen Oper des 17. Jahrhunderts") wurde 2002 von der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Heidelberg angenommen. Hendrik Schulze ist Corresponding Member for Europe der Society for Seventeenth-Century Music.
