Charles Rosen on Elliott Carter
Happy Birthday, Elliott Carter The composer Elliott Carter will be eighty on December 11, but these dates might mislead one about his place in history. Pierre Boulez, twenty years younger than Carter, has remarked, "He does not belong in the generation into which he was born; he really belongs to my generation." It is not just that Carter looks like a man two decades younger than his age, or even that he has produced some of his most important works in the past few years. It is rather that he came into prominence along with men a generation younger than he is, that he is most easily considered critically along with the group of composers, above all European, whose work begins in the early 1950s, like Boulez, Stockhausen, and Berio. Born in New York in 1908, Carter spent his childhood in comfortable circumstances. He finished his education at Harvard, majoring in literature, and then went to Paris like so many other American composers to study with Nadia Boulanger. Perhaps equally important for his future development was a trip to Vienna at the age of seventeen, when he acquired the scores of the new Viennese school, including the earliest serial works of Schoenberg. Even more significant was meeting Charles Ives a year before, whom he admired and continued to see often, and who encouraged his ambitions at composition. Carter never succumbed totally to the influence of Ives, and he was never even briefly to try serial composition. Eventually he also cast aside the influence of Stravinsky and the neoclassical school transmitted in Paris by Boulanger. With it, he cast aside the exploitation of folk material that one finds in Aaron Copland and other American followers of the Paris school. Folk material had only appeared halfheartedly in Carter's early works, which are interesting above all for their characteristic and complex rhythmic energy.

Biography
ELLIOTT CARTER "is one of America's most distinguished creative artists in any field," said Aaron Copland in nominating Mr. Carter for the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters for Eminence in Music in 1971.
Twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize , the first composer to receive the U.S. National Medal of Arts, one of only four composers ever awarded Germany's Ernst Von Siemens Music Prize, and recently made "Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" by the government of France, Elliott Carter is internationally recognized as a pre-eminent American voice in the classical music tradition.
Carter was the subject of recent documentaries by London Weekend Television and the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation. He celebrated his 80th birthday on December 11, 1988 to the accompaniment of salutes from around the world, culminating in December with the U.S. premiere of his recently completed Oboe Concerto . Concurrently, Mr. Carter's complete vocal/chamber works, string quartets

Elliott Carter
(b. 11 December 1908)
In his nineties now, Elliott Carter is still producing works of outstanding originality and invention. One of the few remaining links to the original generation of experimental composers active between the two world wars, his music continues to challenge, excite and enthrall. This site, created as a birthday tribute in 1998, will feature a small collection of articles and papers on Carter's music, an annotated discography of current and past recordings, and a set of links to other sites of interest. The photograph shows Carter, Ursula Oppens and Mathias Bamert during a rehearsal of the Piano Concerto at the Glasgow Musica Nova festival, 1983.

Night Fantasies (1980). Elliott Carter
From the New York Times The pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard plays at Zankel Hall in Manhattan on Monday: PIERRE-LAURENT AIMARD — Pianist. Carter ("Two Diversions"; "Night Fantasies"), Ives (Sonata No. 2). Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, 7:30. (212) 247-7800. I wasn't aware Aimard was playing Night Fantasies . Carter's best work in my opinion.
At Tower today, I saw the Aimard/Graham Ives CD. I had already exceeded my quota on new CDs with the Nonesuch 25% off sale (the new Adams and the Kronos Harry Partch) and a Godspeed You Black Emperor double CD. Next time... String Quartet No. 5 (1995). Elliott Carter
The Chamber Music Society of Detroit recently cancelled the performance of Elliott Carter's String Quartet No. 5 Mark Stryker: But society president Lois Beznos asked the Pacifica to drop the Carter quartet for fear of alienating those subscribers who complained after a November concert by the Juilliard String Quartet that included 20th-century atonal works by Viennese modernist Anton Webern. This is lunacy. I have not heard this quartet although I did attend a San Francisco Conservatory of Music lecture/performance series of the first four quartets (with the charming Carter in attendance). Independent of what was best for the Detroit audience, I find these works difficult but worthy of the intellectual effort. And that familiarity helps me place them in the context of the overall

Independent of what was best for the Detroit audience, I find these works difficult but worthy of the intellectual effort. And that familiarity helps me place them in the context of the overall string quartet literature . Having said that, I much prefer a Carter piano piece, Night Fantasies , which despite also being unconventional, did not require rigorous study to enjoy (although I did later buy the score).
