COMPOSERS
JOHN CAGE
Born: September 5, 1912. Los Angeles, CA
Died: August 12, 1992. New York, NY
American composer, performer, graphic artist, poet and writer. Expert on edible mushrooms and cofounder of the New York Mycological Society.

In an autobiographical statement John Cage wrote, "My favorite music is the music I haven't yet heard. I don't hear the music I write: I write in order to hear the music I haven't yet heard." This desire to find new sounds and to abandon the traditional role of the composer as a controlling authority were hallmarks of John Cage's career and made him at once a revered and reviled figure in modern music.
Cage was the son of an inventor, and he had an unremarkable and generally unmusical childhood. He attended two years of college, then left to travel in Europe. When he returned to the United States, he began serious study, first with Henry Cowell and then with Arnold Schoenberg . He began writing in his own musical system, often using techniques similar to those of Schoenberg. In 1937 he moved to Seattle and took a job accompanying a dance company. From this he began to view music as segments of time to be filled with sounds. During this period his music is marked by strict, mathematically devised proportions of time. He filled these segments with new sounds, including different objects used as percussion (brake drums, for example), electronic sounds and prepared piano (a piano with objects placed between the strings to modify pitch and timbre).

Bacchanale (1940). John Cage
Is it the piano preparation or the playing technique? Whatever, Margaret Leng Tan's recording of John Cage's Bacchanale is an excellent hybrid between percussion and piano; muffled, damped, rhythmic and yet playful. Intended for percussion, it was Cage's first work for prepared piano New Sounds has a Real excerpt although John Schafer talks over it in his introduction to a show dedicated to Cage. In a Landscape, for Harp or Piano (1948). John Cage
Eric Nordby on Live Journal gets introduced to John Cage via In a Landscape For some reason it is so simple yet so beautiful. It somewhat reminds me of cold winters in England. Believe me I know what that is like. It's sad and heart warming. I feel very comfortable right now but yet very compelled. If you are going to hear one John Cage work

John Cage references on the internet
This list is not updated frequently. Last update was April 1998. The Mattress Factory's John Cage materials document an installation by John Cage in 1991. This involved use of a number of pieces of art and furniture arranged according to some random factors (but via detailed scripts or "scores" were worked out as to how it should be changed daily.) See a small page detailing the installation and some images. If your web connection is fast, try all the images Carl Stone 's web pages include info on his radio show, Imaginary Landscape, named after a Cage piece, and I believe there's a number of references to Cage in playlists and perhaps other files here. Carl is also a composer who has some releases out on New Albion , which has a page on Carl Stone in addition to their Cage pages referenced elsewhere in this page. Introduction
Rolywholyover at the Guggenheim museum in SoHo is a collection of items relevant to the life and work of John Cage. The exhibition space has been divided into four sections:
  • the first gallery containing items selected at random from New York museums, chess tables, and the cabinets of musical scores and (Cage's?) books;
  • the small gallery containing two-dimensional works by Cage (scores and paintings) with a "permanent" arrangement;
  • the performance space; and
  • the long gallery containing randomly selected artworks (mostly two dimensional) repositioned daily according to the chance-derived score Rolywholyover, the interactive computer terminal, and the Plexiglas flat files of Cage ephemera.
When people think of John Cage there are usually two things that immediately come to mind formal chance operations and "silence". In this paper I will analyze the different components of the galleries (except the performance space) paying attention to the way they reflect upon these themes.
What I Understand About John Cage
Every well-intended message is the perfect representation of an idea in the mind of its sender. What is received is something entirely different. The best that can be hoped for is that the concept in the mind of the receiver is accurate to the original concept within limits acceptable to the sender. The received message is never equal to the sent message. The received message is a mixture elements of the intended message modified through the processes of encoding, transduction, and decoding combined with the noise of the channel. This mutated message has a life of its own and if we assume an intent to transmit an identical copy of a concept is beyond the control of the sender. Cage avoided this dilemma altogether by intentionally sending metamessages. "This message and its noise is about this message and its noise." Noise and message are to remain connected. The receiver is not to separate the two not that there ever was any choice in the first place.

    Or search the encyclopaedia: Cage, John US composer. His interest in Indian classical music led him to the view that the purpose of new music was to change the way people listen. From 1948 he experimented with instruments, graphics, and methods of random selection in an effort to generate a music of pure incident. For example, he used a number of radios, tuned to random stations, in Imaginary Landscape IV (1951). His ideas greatly influenced late 20th-century aesthetics. Cage studied briefly with Arnold Schoenberg, also with Henry Cowell, and joined others in reacting against the European music tradition in favour of a freer style open to non-Western attitudes. Working in films during the 1930s, Cage assembled and toured a percussion orchestra using ethnic instruments and noisemakers, for which Double Music (1941) was composed (with Lou Harrison). He invented the prepared piano, in which different objects are inserted between the strings, altering the tone and the sound produced, to tour as accompanist with the dancer Merce Cunningham, a lifelong collaborator.
