Giulio Caccini
Composer and singer. After instruction with Giovanni Animuccia in Rome, he studied with Scipione delle Palle in Florence, under Medici patronage. By 1579 he was singing at the Medici court. His earliest known compositional endeavor came in 1589, when he contributed a song to an intermedio for the marriage of Duke Ferdinand I. Initially his fame spread chiefly through his singing: by the 1580s he was singing regularly for Ippolito Aldobrandini in Ferrara and for the Este court there. During the 1570s and 1580s he began a celebrated association with the "camerata" of Florence, and partly under the influence of its membersincluding Vincenzo Galilei and Bardihe began composing in a vocal style that, as he declared, more closely approximated speech. After a brief appointment in Rome as Bardi's secretary (1592), Caccini returned to Florence; during the 1590s he served the Medici court, where he became music director in 1600. That year he discussed his new vocal style in the preface to his opera Euridice.

Giulio Caccini
(c.1550 - 1618)
Italian composer working in Florence, and one of the most important pioneers of the new monody. Indeed, Caccini boasts of having invented the genre himself, although there are some examples prior to his publications entitled "Nuove Musiche" in 1602 and 1614. The new monodic style involved a virtuoso high voice with written-out ornaments, accompanied by simple chordal bass. This new separation in function was of course integral to the subsequent development of Baroque music as a whole. Although one cannot give Caccini the full credit he thought he deserved, his importance can hardly be over-stated. He is featured prominently in any historical anthology of song forms which includes the 17th century. ~ Todd McComb (8/97) Back to Renaissance Repertoire

Major Works:

The opera Euridice
Operas, songs, and choral works
He is famous for Le nuove musiche (New Music) of 1602 which illustrated the new monodic style of the early Baroque with canzonets and madrigals. Other Information: Caccini bridges the Renaissance and Baroque eras. His music represents an emphasis on monody (solo vocal music with harmonic accompaniment) instead of the Renaissance ideal of four equal voices in counterpoint. In addition to composing, Caccini was known as a singer, lutenist, and an excellent gardner. He worked in Florence for Cosimo I de' Medici around 1565. There he associated with a group of poets and musicians organized by Count Giovanni de Bardi (1534-1612) and the Italian nobleman Jacopo Corsi (1561-1602). This group is known as the Florentine Camerata. They met in the homes of aristocrats in Florence between 1573 and 1590. The chief products of this group were the first operas in music history and an expressive monodic style called stile rappresentativo.

    GIULIO CACCINI
CACCINI, GIULIO (1558-1615?), Italian musical composer, also known as Giulio Romano, but to be distinguished from the painter of that name, was born at Rome about 1558, and in 1578 entered the service of the grand duke of Tuscany at Florence. He collaborated with J. Pen in the early attempts at musical drama which were the ancestors of modern opera (Dafne, 1594, and Euridice, 1600), produced at Florence by the circle of musicians and amateurs which met at the houses of G. Bardi and Corsi. He also published in 1601 Le nuove musiche, a collection of songs which is of great importance in the history of singing as well as in that of the transition period of musical composition. He was a lyric composer rather than a dramatist like Pen, and the genuine beauty of his works makes them acceptable even at the present day. CACCINI CACHAR
