William Byrd (1543 - 1623) BACKGROUND AND HISTORICAL PERSPSECTIVE By: Jason R. Ogan The greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries, William Byrd was a versatile composer. Although remaining a Catholic, loyalty that cost him considerable trouble in times of persecution in England, he served as a member of the Chapel Royal, providing music for the liturgy of the Church of England and, on a more private scale, for his fellow-Catholics. Biographical Information on William Byrd Links CHURCH MUSIC Byrd's compositions for the church can be separated into two categories; those for the Catholic liturgy and those designed for the officially recognised Church of England. The first category includes settings of the Mass for three, four and five voices, and a large quantity of other works for the various seasons of the church year. For the Church of England Byrd wrote a Great Service and three other service settings, using the texts of the Anglican liturgy. In addition to the above compositions Byrd composed a number of anthems and psalm-settings, and consort songs with sacred texts of one sort or another.

In William ByrdÕs story we see a man torn between his attachments to England and to America. In the eighteenth century the two identities could pull the settlers in seemingly opposite directions. ByrdÕs life introduces us to several important facets of colonial life, including politics, trade, and society. And it reminds us of AmericaÕs continuing political and psychological link to the "mother country. FROM THE TEXT The sun went down behind the steep, forested ridge of the Alleghenies. Resplendent stars shone brightly in the clear autumn sky while bear, deer, and opossum foraged among the darkened trees. In the midst of a vast and potent wilderness there glowed a solitary campfire, a flickering circle of light illuminating tents, horses, and a cluster of men. The men standing by the campfire were working their way through swamps and brush surveying a dividing line between the colonies of Virginia and North Carolina. Their supplies had long since run low, and most of their horses were lame. Nonetheless, their camp was festive: this was October 30, 1728, the king's birthday, and patriotism led them to consume spirits and discharge fireworks in celebration. The men were doing their best, toasting King George II with the last of their liquor, a bottle of cherry brandy carefully preserved by their leader, William Byrd, and drinking to the queen and all her royal progeny with drafts of pure water from an Allegheny tributary. To complete the celebration, they set off explosives, fashioned of green cane from a nearby field and laid in the fire. The air within the cane joints expanded and punctured the night air with loud and satisfying bangs.

He was probably a member of one of the numerous Lincolnshire families of the name who were to be found at Lincoln, Spalding, Pinchbeck, Moulton and Epworth in the 16th century. According to Wood, he was "bred up to musick under Thomas Tallis." He was appointed organist of Lincoln cathedral about 1563, and on the 14th September 1568 was married at St Margaret in the Close to Ellen or Julian Birley. On the 22nd of February 1569 he was sworn in as a member of the Chapel Royal, but he does not seem to have left Lincoln immediately. In the Chapel Royal he shared with Tallis the honorary title of organist, and on the 22nd January 1575 the two composers obtained a licence for twenty-one years from Queen Elizabeth to print music and music-paper, a monopoly which does not seem to have been at all remunerative. In 1575 Byrd and Tallis published a collection of Latin motets for five and six voices, printed by Thomas Vautrollier.
