William Byrd, (b. 1543, d. July 4, 1623), the most famous and versatile English composer of his age, inherited a characteristically English musical style from his teacher Thomas Tallis When only 20 years of age he was appointed organist and master of the choristers at Lincoln Cathedral, but he left in 1572 for London, where he had been named a gentleman of the Chapel Royal. Although a steadfast Roman Catholic, Byrd remained a loyal member of the Anglican musical establishment until his death. MIDI FILE - Galliard for 6 violas (1'45'')
The music he wrote for the Anglican church was surpassed only by his music for the Roman Catholic rite, most of which was privately performed in the houses of his patrons, who were members of the recusant Catholic minority. Despite the allusions to religious persecution in the text of Byrd's Motets, he was respected and admired for his musical abilities by Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. MIDI FILE - Hey ho To the greenwood (0'52'') Byrd was a fine organist and a virtuoso performer on the virginals, for which he wrote numerous pieces, including fantasias, dances, variations, and program music. He was one of the pioneers of the consort song (for voice and viols) and also excelled in chamber music of many kinds: sacred and secular songs for domestic use, and a wide variety of forms and styles ranging from lullabies to theater music.

Contributed by David Gore
Name William Byrd Place of Birth Virginia Born Died Westover and Colonel William Byrd II
"The broad lawn that rolls down to the waters edge at Westover is shaded by huge trees - the yew planted by George Washington, the elms and sycamores, and the line of tulip poplars. They stand there before this great Georgian mansion which has withstood all the ravages caused by fire and wars ever since William Byrd II built it beside the James river 260 years ago".
Family Tree
Pennsylvania had William Penn and Virginia had the great William Byrd. Colonel William Byrd II (1674-1744), to give him his full title, was born on his father's plantation in Virginia but brought up in Essex and remained in England for most of his early life. Aged thirty when his father died in 1704, William returned to Virginia to manage the family's 26,000 acre estate and later built a fine house there which stands today. He became President of the Colonial Council, on which he sat as a Member for 35 years, and in 1733 established two towns, Richmond on the James river - now the capital - and Petersburg on the Appomattuck. He was truly one of the founding fathers of the modern State of Virginia whose southern boundary he personally established. Colonel William Byrd II William was hardy and energetic and, like most Virginians of his time, often in the saddle. A great traveller, he was no ordinary pioneer: this was a man of culture, wide accomplishments and considerable charm, a genial host who had powerful friends on both sides of the Atlantic. He crossed that ocean ten times and "Golden Rose", the ship in which he often sailed, is in the background to Hans Hyssing's portrait of him.

BYRD, WILLIAM (1828-1898). William Byrd, lawyer, soldier, and politician, was born at Cottage Farm, Clarke County, Virginia, on September 9, 1828, the son of Richard Evelyn and Anne (Harrison) Byrd. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute on July 4, 1849, and afterward took a degree in law at the University of Virginia. By March 1853 he was practicing law in the Travis County, Texas, community of Webberville, and by 1854 was popular enough to be chosen orator at the annual Fourth of July barbecue. The Austin Texas State Gazette see austin state gazette ) referred to him as "a young lawyer spoken of highly by his friends," and declared his address "to have been quite eloquent and credible to that young gentleman." A clipping from an unidentified newspaper in Byrd's scrapbook, now preserved at the Barker Texas History Center qv at the University of Texas at Austin, quotes the 1854 speech in full. Its spread-eagle oratory praises the creed of the Young America movement and attacks the North for "tramping on the constitution" and for "substituting for the wisdom and virtue of their patriotic fathers, the fatuity and villainy of unprincipled fanatics deliberately [inaugurating] a series of legislative acts against slavery." In August 1854 Byrd moved to Austin, where he formed a partnership with T. Scott Anderson.

Byrd, William ( b ?Lincoln, 1543 - d Stondon Massey, 4 July, 1623)
Byrd was brought up in London as a pupil of Thomas Tallis. In 1563 he became Organist and Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral, and married there in 1568. Although he remained at Lincoln until c1572, he was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1570, and its organist form 1575 (at first with Tallis).
In London he rapidly established himself as a composer gaining influential friends and patrons, and earning favour with Queen Elizabeth who granted him and Tallis a patent in 1575 for the printing and marketing of part music and manuscript paper.
Following his wife's death in 1580 he remarried. He and his family were often cited as Catholic recusants, but he continued to compose openly for the Catholic church. In 1593 Byrd moved to Essex where he spent the rest of his life and was frequently involved in property litigation. His reputation was very high: he was described as 'Father of British Music', Morley and Tomkins were among his pupils.
Much of his varied output was published during his lifetime. His sacred music ranges widely in style and mood, from the florid and penitential motets of the Cantiones sacrae to the concise and devotional motets of the Gradualia (motet sections intended to form an impressive scheme of complete Mass Propers). His secular songs predate the true madrigal as they use intricate flowing counterpoint derived from an earlier English style (cf Tallis and Taverner), and range from solemn lamentations to exuberant jests. His instrumental music is especially important as the many consort songs greatly influenced the later lute ayre, which his virginal pieces and unparalleled in richness of invention and contrapuntal brilliance. In all the genres in which he wrote, Byrd was both traditionalist, and innovator, channelling continental ideas into a native English tradition, and his expressive range was unusually wide for his day. He wrote for both Catholic and Anglican churches with equal genius.
