William Byrd
English composer, born in London in 1542 or 1543; died 4 July, 1623. He was the son of a musician, and studied music principally under Thomas Tallis Palestrina . He was the first Englishman to write madrigals, a form which originated in Italy in the thirteenth century, and received its highest development in the sixteenth century at the hands of Arcadelt and other masters. An organist and performer of the first order upon the virginals, Byrd wrote for the latter instrument an enormous number of compositions, many of which are played today. His chief significance lies, however, in his compositions for the Church, of which he produced a great many. In 1607 he published a collection of gradualia for the whole ecclesiastical year, among which is to be found a three-part setting of the words of the multitude in the Passion according to St. John. A modern edition of this setting was published in 1899. In 1611 "Psalms, Songs and Sonnets, Some Solemn, Others Joyful, Framed to the Life of the Words, Fit for Voyces or Viols, etc." appeared. Probably in the same year was issued "Parthenia", a collection of virginal music, in which Byrd collaborated with J. Bull and Orlando Gibbons. Three masses for three, four, and five voices, respectively belong to the composer's best period. The one for five voices was reprinted by the Musical Antiquarian Society in 1841, and in 1899 the same work was issued by Breitkopf and Hartel. Two of his motets, "Domine, ne irascaris" and "Civitas sancti tui", with English texts, are in the repertoire of most

William Byrd
Byrd was the leading English composer of his generation, and together with his continental colleagues Giovanni Palestrina (c.1525-1594) and Orlando de Lassus (1532-1594), one of the acknowledged great masters of the late Renaissance. Byrd is considered by many the greatest English composer of any age, and indeed his substantial volume of high quality compositions in every genre of the time makes it easy to consider him the greatest composer of the Renaissance - his versatility and genius outshining those of Palestrina and Lassus in a self-evident way. English music of the period was amazingly rich, dominating the music of the continent in depth and variety, in a way that was not seen before or since. Also, Byrd's pre-eminent position at the beginning of music publication in England allowed him to leave a substantial printed legacy at the inception of many important musical forms. It would be impossible to over-estimate his subsequent influence on the music of England, the Low Countries, and Germany. Byrd was probably born in Lincoln where he took up the post of organist at an early age. Later he accepted a position in the Royal Chapel of Queen Elizabeth, and retired at the age of fifty to a home at Stondon Massey near the Essex estate of one of his richest patrons, Sir John Petre. Byrd was a Catholic in Protestant England, and though this position demanded a certain amount of seclusion and discretion, his loyalty to the Crown was never in doubt. Indeed, Byrd continued to enjoy the favor of the Queen, as well as continuation of his privilege as sole holder of the publishing monopoly which had been awarded jointly to Byrd and

William Byrd
M ost likely born in Lincolnshire in 1543, Byrd was the foremost English composer of his time. As a student of Thomas Tallis he was exposed to music of the Chapel Royal and the best of the English tradition. In 1563 he was appointed organist of Lincoln Cathedral, and by 1572 joined Tallis a gentleman of the Chapel Royal where he shared organist duties with Tallis.
T he relationship between Tallis and Byrd was personal as well as professional and in 1575 they jointly published Cantiones Sacrae , 34 motets dedicated to Elizabeth I.
A lthough Byrd was Catholic in Protestant England, he had no problems with his superiors. Many of his patrons, such as the Earl of Worcester, were Catholics as well, and when England momentarily returned to Roman Church he had no shortage of music to accompany the revival; he had been composing music for underground catholic circles for years. He composed for every branch of music; Consort, Sacred, Keyboard music. He left no instrument without a piece of his music. Byrd's last publication was Psalmes, Songs and Sonnets

WILLIAM BYRD (circa 1540July 4, 1623)
Any investigation of the music and life of William Byrd must depend heavily on the writings of E.H. Fellowes, Thurston Dart, Joseph Kerman, Craig Monson, Alan Brown, Richard Turbet and Philip Brett. Fellowes provided the first detailed account, which hasrecently been superseded by a new study by John Harley. Harley has revisited the archival documents and has made a number of fascinating discoveries, gleaned mostly from legal and genealogical records, which help put flesh on the bones of Byrd and his relatives. Not only are details of Byrd's immediate family more clear, but we now know that the composer was a Londoner, and was not from Lincoln as previously thought.
Despite the wealth of new biographical material now available we still know very little of Byrd's childhood and early musical training, and thus have not yet glimpsed the full plumage of the 'early Byrd'. Indeed, until only very recently, his year of birth was considered to be c.1543, owing entirely to a statement in his will, dated November 15, 1622, in which Byrd describes himself as 'nowe in the Eightieth years of myne age' (Byrd died on July 4, 1623 in Stondon Massey, Essex; his will was proven on October 30). However, this document cannot be used as dating evidence in this way as no date is given in the preamble of the will (the majority of Tudor preambles contain a date); all it tells us is that Byrd was 80 years old when he began writing his will, and that it was completed by November 15, 1622. A casual trawl through the London will registers shows that the time between a testator starting and finishing his will could span from several months to several years.

The Keyboard Music of William Byrd
William Byrd (1543-1623) was one of England's most gifted and respected composers of the late Renaissance. Justly called "a father of music" even during his lifetime, he had that rare ability to see the future without being rejected by his own time. His vocal music in particular stands supreme amongst all of the time, being, in his own words, "framed to the life of the words", instead of being constructed solely on musical logic as in the past. He probably studied with Thomas Tallis, was appointed organist of Lincoln Cathedral in 1563 (aged 19!), and to the prestigious post of "Gentleman of Her Maiesties Chappell", co-organist with Tallis, in 1569. His music for the "virginalls" (the word then included what we today separate as harpsichord, spinet and virginal) is only a tiny portion of his work, but he brought the style to maturity virtually singlehandedly. Notes on the Music
The first European music notation system was neumes, which were totally musical signs - they indicated the sounds and techniques to be used to perform the music. About the 9th century, theorists got the upper hand in music, and everything had to be fitted into diatonic modes to be officially acceptable. Of course, good musicians have always insisted on singing in tune and have always cared more about their sound than about theory, so musica ficta came to mean the rules that musicians used to translate from modes back to good music, and that is the way I always interpret them.

HOME COMPOSERS BYRD
William Byrd (c.1539-1623) Born in London at the end of 1539 or early 1540, William Byrd was the foremost composer of the Elizabethan age and among the three or four English composers since the Renaissance who have stood unequivocally as equals with their continental contemporaries. A master of keyboard music and the madrigal as well as Latin and English church music, he was an organist and member of the sovereign's private religious establishment, the Chapel Royal. Yet he remained throughout his life a dedicated Roman Catholic who was persecuted as a recusant and who upheld through his art the old faith. The spirit of his work survived undimmed through the neglect of the baroque and classical periods. It was only with the publication of The Byrd Edition during the 20th century, however, that the full range of his genius became evident and accessible to music lovers, an awareness enhanced by the wide range of recordings now available, performed by many of the world's leading early music specialists.

Byrd, William (1543 - 1623)
The greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries, William Byrd was a versatile composer. Although remaining a Catholic, loyalty that cost him considerable trouble in times of persecution in England, he served as a member of the Chapel Royal, providing music for the liturgy of the Church of England and, on a more private scale, for his fellow-Catholics. Church Music Byrd's compositions for the church may be separated into those for the Catholic liturgy and those designed for the officially recognised Church of England. The first category includes settings of the Mass for three, four and five voices, and a large quantity of other works for the various seasons of the church year. For the Church of England Byrd wrote a Great Service and three other service settings, using the texts of the Anglican liturgy. In addition to these compositions there are a number of anthems and psalm-settings, and consort songs with sacred texts of one sort or another.
