Early works like The Sinking of the Titanic (1969) were meshes of found sounds and notated segments. When composing more traditional arrangements, he writes for specific musicians, not just specific instruments, so his scores persistently smudge the line between where his transcribed intentions end and a performer's voice begins. And asked from professorial advice, he might reply with a handy paradox. For example, what would the composer, whose touring ensemble includes a keyboard-synthesizer player and an electric guitarist, suggest to a student writing for a mix of acoustic (or "non-amplified") and electric instruments? "I would recommend that the student see what are the acoustic properties of the amplified instruments," says Bryars, who teaches music at De Montfort University in Scraptoft, England. "I remember once, when I started writing for the alto saxophone, a saxophonist told me to think of it as being like a cross between an oboe and a viola, but louder. That tends to make you think of different instruments as already being hybrids. so there are all sorts of ways of blending." To write best for a specific instrument is to understand that it is, in fact, many instruments at once. If his answer has a tidy Zen contradiction at its heart, his music is similarly marked by a monastic intent: stillness, meditaion and the conservatively planted epiphany are all hallmarks of his compositions. He was born in Yorkshire in 1943. He first acquired a reputation in the music world as a jazz bassist working in the mid-sixties with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. He also worked closely with composers such as Cornelius Cardew, as well as founding the Portsmouth Sinfonia, which acquired a cult status for its performances and recordings of the classical repertoire with minimal music skills. The first recording Gavin Bryars made on the Point Music label was released in 1993. This was a new version of the 1970's cult work, Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, which was a world-wide hit. (Originally, Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet was released on Brian Eno's Obscure Label, alongside The Sinking Of The Titanic (1969), which was his first major work as a composer.) A brand-new version of The Sinking Of The Titanic was released on Point Music in autumn 1994. Releases planned on Pont Muisc for 1996 include an album with his Cello Concerto, featuring cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. Recording for labels other than Point include the albums Three Viennese Dancers, After The Requiem, The Black River, and Vita Nova, featuring the Hilliard Ensemble. In 1995 his String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2 were released, performed by the Balanescu Quartet.

He started his career from an experimental position rare in British music, and has continued to chart a radical course while attracting an international following. Nonetheless, he has remained steadfastly beyond the establishment and always several degrees ahead of it. This pattern of subversion can be traced to his student days. While reading philosophy at Sheffield University he became a professional jazz bassist and a pioneer of free improvisation.
