The following text is a transcription of excerpts from a discussion held in 1972. The corresponding edited recording was included on the 4LP set Music Before Revolution (EMI Electrola, 1C 16528954/957, 1972). Metzger: Mr. Feldman, most of your music is very soft at a limit of audibility, which means technically in the case of record, at the limit of tapes. I should say your music is ... there is a contradiction between your music and the world in which we live. The world is much louder. Would you agree that your music is negative in the sense, that it is a negation of the existing world. That is the meaning of it, ... that your particular technique to negate the world is softness? Feldman: If I may be presumptuous, I could say, that all important things negate the world or are in contradiction to the world. I feel that my music is important. I feel that my music is important to the world. But I find, that various attitudes in the world is making it more possible for my music to exist than, for example, twenty years ago, where the environment seemed totally hostile to the music. My music is quiet but the audiences in the past twenty years have become more quiet. Metzger: But the environment, the technical environment, it's another thing than people. You see the world is technique. Am I right when I say, that your music implies the postulate that the world must change, or that it must be changed, that it must be arranged in a manner that it is even acoustically possible to listen to a piece of yours?

Students of twentieth-century music, even those unfamiliar with the sound of his music, will recognise at least one score by Earle Brown: an elegant arrangement of Modrianesque rectangles entitled December 1952 . A treat as much for the eye as for the ear, it assumed classic status almost as soon as it was written, and was routinely reproduced in textbooks on modern music. Today, it continues to exert its enigmatic fascination on intrepid performers unfazed by its notational peculiarities. Yet for all its legendary allure, December 1952 Although graphic and indeterminate notation became a pre-occupation for many significant composers worldwide during the 1960s and 70s, including the leading lights of the European avant-garde, its heartland was the New York of the 1950s and its catalyst the visual arts. As Brown himself recalled: ‘My primary esthetic influences were the spontaneity, direct contact, the "now-ness" and the in-the-moment immediacy of the Abstract Expressionist painters, especially the "improvisational" techniques of Jackson Pollock and the subtle coloristic effects of Philip Guston and Bill de Kooning’. Other important influences on Brown were the mobiles of Alexander Calder, the collage techniques of Robert Rauschenberg, and — from his early years playing jazz trumpet — the spacious, energetic big-band sound of Stan Kenton. Octet I for eight channels, using the

Amerikaans componist

Intent on an aeronautical career, he studied engineering and mathematics at Northeastern University (1944-5) before joining the Army Air Corps. Subsequently, he attended the Schillinger School of Music, Boston (1946-50), and studied the trumpet and composition privately. His encounter with the work of Jackson Pollock and Alexander Calder was particularly influential to his developing musical aesthetic. After moving to Denver (1950-52), he painted, taught the Schillinger method and explored various compositional techniques. At Cage's invitation, he travelled to New York to work on the Project for Music for Magnetic Tape, the results of which included Octet I (1952-3). This studio experience proved valuable in his later roles as an editor and recording engineer for Capitol Records (1955-60) and as the director of artists and repertoire, and producer for Mainstream-Time Records'
