WILL I LET THIS IN?
Some thoughts on the music of Havergal Brian,
from AARON RABUSHKA
I was intrigued by the call of the Havergal Brian Society for recommendations on which Brian works to promote and which to present first to new audiences and I herewith offer my feelings on the matter. I will not deny that these recommendations are based on my subjective opinions of the Brian works that I know I do not claim that this knowledge is all-encompassing nor am I attempting here to assess the best or worst of his output. My own first exposure to Brian was on an old BBC Music Showcase broadcast in which Antony Hopkins presented Symphony No 12. I remember being intrigued by the biography and music that he (Hopkins) offered and wanted to know and hear more. When I mention Brian's name to the classical music enthusiasts that I know they link it only to ('oh! no!') the Gothic if they recognize it at all. It is my unwavering belief that accessibility lies with the listener rather than with the composer 'will I let this in?' is the former's decision. Furthermore, I do not confuse 'I don't like it' with 'it isn't accessible', and with that in mind have picked out those works I think would most likely enthrall a new listener and entice him to explore further. From the miscellaneous orchestral works I would suggest the Festal Dance and the Tinker's Wedding overture as the most likely to succeed with those new to Brian's music. They are short enough that reluctant concert producers may let them through and they could speak directly to people who listen to little other than John Williams film scores (and note that this is not a slam against Williams or his listeners). We can get very nearly the whole way to Saturn, fall two letters short of Uranus, nearly find an unsavoury recipe for Salt with Urea, almost see the inspirational part of the foot that Blake's brother entered as a falling star, the tarsus. If we take out the promising Star we are left with the unhelpful Ula. Astralu is suggestive of an air-closet which might be Salutara, nearly healthy? Yet a meaning does seems to lurk there and the erasure suggests that Brian wished to keep it secret. It sounds like something that could have arisen from the mysterious pages of Paracelsus? Or was it just a word misremembered, or a word dreamed? 3: Speaking Spodetian?

A very wide-ranging - and entrely personal - excursus of choral works deserving to be programmed by large choruses. Originally developed for Crouch End Festival Chorus and its enterprising conductor David Temple, this is addressed to the chorus master keen not to subject the planet to the millionth performance of the Vivaldi Gloria, and is a deliberately coat-trailing selection. In time full details and a critique will be available for all pieces. John Adams
Harmonium Béla Bartók
The miraculous mandarin Like Daphnis , a stunning orchestral work with a limited choral contribution, but just sufficient to justify programming (though, of course, the orchestra would have to be up to scratch!). The Bartók is a superbly gruesome story of prostitution, attempted murder and macabre mystery culminating in compassion and death. The violent score etches like acid every nuance of the story, whose unconscious subtext is as clear as day. Karl-Birger Blomdahl

£500 reward for composer’s lost work.
A reward of £500 is offered to solve the mystery of the lost scores of the composer Havergal Brian. One missing score, that of the giant cantata Prometheus Unbound, is valued above all else. And research shows it could be lying forgotten somewhere in the BBC. For the person able to uncover the work, the Havergal Brian Society is prepared to hand over £500 reward. This is the entire sum the society has been offered anonymously for the recovery of Havergal Brian works. Prometheus unbound was composed betweeen 1937 and 1944 and the English composer is said to have considered it his masterpiece.
Some believe it to he conceived for forces even larger than these employed in Brian's most famous work, Gothic Symphony, dubbed the largest symphony ever written. David Brown, secretary of the Brian Society, tells me: "There seems to be some grounds for thinking that Prometheus Unbound is even now lying undisturbed on BBC premises. Documentary evidence indicates that it was held within the Corporation during part of the lifetime. We are most anxious to hear from anyone who may know something of this score's whereabouts, and we consider it of sufficient importance to be willing to pay the full reward sum of £500 to anyone who can give verifiable proof of this". The score is said to be bound in two very large green coloured volumes. Havergal Brian died in 1972 at the age of 96. It is known that he destroyed a large quantity of his early work, but an unknown number of short scores and full scores are missing.

Havergal Brian
William (Havergal) Brian January 29 November 28 ), was a British composer He acquired a legendary status at the time of his rediscovery in the 1950s and 1960s for the number of symphonies he had managed to write (thirty-two, an unusually large number for any composer since Beethoven ), and for his creative persistence in the face of almost total neglect during the greater part of his long life. Even now none of his works can be said to be performed with any frequency, but few composers who have fallen into neglect after an early period of success have continued to produce so many serious and ambitious works so long after any chance of performance would seem to have gone for good. William Brian (he adopted the name "Havergal" from a local family of hymn -writers) was born in Dresden, a district of Stoke-on-Trent , and was one of a very small number of serious-music composers to originate from the English working class . After attending an elementary school he had difficulty finding any congenial work, and taught himself the rudiments of music . For a time he was organist of Odd Rode Church just across the border in Cheshire . In 1895 he heard a choir rehearsing Elgar 's King Olaf , attended the first performance and became a fervent enthusiast of the new music being produced by Richard Strauss and the British composers of the day. Through attending music festivals he made the lifelong friendship of his near-contemporary composer

    97. Langdon Jones - Brian, Gothic Symphony
This is a description of havergal brian s Symphony no. 1 The Gothic , the largest symphony ever composed. havergal brian. Symphony no. 1 Gothic .
    http://www.langdonjones.com/brian.html
    Havergal Brian
    Symphony no. 1 'Gothic'
Havergal Brian was a British composer, and when writing of his life or his works, you find yourself having to use superlatives. For example, he was born in 1876, began composing in the 1880s, and was still doing it in 1968! By the age of seventy, Brian had written some six symphonies, but then, despite being almost totally neglected, he then experienced a creative surge, and went on to write a further 26! The Gothic Symphony is the first, and was written between 1919 and 1927. It is a six-movement work calling for truly monstrous resources. The last three movements consist of a setting of the 'Te Deum'. The symphony has actually made the pages of the Guinness Book of Records, calling, as it does, for something like a thousand performers. The orchestra contains complete families of instruments, and you will find such things as bass oboes and pedal trombones along with curiosities like thunder machines. Brian has described the privations he underwent while writing it. At the time he was earning a pittance copying music, and the hours were long. He would do this all day, and then at night turn to the 'Gothic'. At the time he was living in semi-starvation, and the result of this was that he would often experience hallucinations. Being a hard-headed Northerner, when Brian would look up to see the figure of Bach sitting opposite him, he would realise it was a hallucination, and not take any notice. The symphony has, so far as I know, only been performed a handful of times, and one of those occasions was in Sheffield Town Hall where, apparently, most of the room was taken up by performers, leaving very little space for the audience. Anecdotal material abounds. I was told that in the rehearsals for the performance some years ago in the Royal Albert Hall, that the choirs (every choral society in London including children's choirs!) were numbered. It is said that in the dress rehearsal choir D2 missed their cue, and apparently didn't sing a note in the entire work. Nobody noticed, apparently.
