She appears first in the Illinois records in 1725, as wife of Bellegarde , her second husband. Catherine Bechet's parentage also remains unproven. However, it appears from the records that Jean Francois Bechet who married Marianne Fafart, bapt. 1711, on May 3, 1728 may be her brother. His name has been shown as Bechet, Becquet, Bouchet, as was hers. His parents were Jean Becquet (dec'd as of May 3, 1728) and wife Jeanne Claire deMontee Catherine Bechet, as wife of Bellegarde, sold Jean Francois Bechet some property in Fort de Chartres, on June 6, 1725. He witnessed her marriage contract when Catherine married her third husband, Sieur DeLessarts, on Nov 26, 1727. He was also deputy guardian of her three children when Catherine Bechet died in 1737. Il étudie la composition peut-être avec Gossec, le violon avec Leclair (d'après Fétis). Il est l’un des principaux violonistes du "Concert des Amateurs", créé par Gossec en en 1769, et en devient le chef d'orchestre en 1773, quand Gossec prend la direction du "Concert Spirituel". A superb craftsman Music by Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges - investigated by JOHN BELL YOUNG '... spirited, inventive and charming ...' O J Simpson and his legal 'dream team', it seems, were not the only ones to play the race card to sell an idea. Illustrating the cover of this CD is a carefully posed photograph of a most elegantly attired gentleman. Staring somewhat smugly into the camera, he seems to embody an idea of the eighteenth century aristocracy. Indeed, his three cornered hat, powdered wig and silk finery convey what is surely a costumer's vision of that era and its mannered decorum. Of course, what stands out here, in sharp contradiction to conventional historical images depicting malnourished slaves in chains, is that the gentleman is black. He is a stand-in, it seems, for the eponym of this CD, and the composer of the works it is devoted to: Joseph Boulogne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1748-1799). 3 John Bell Young A SUPERB CRAFTSMAN The answer is a resounding yes . Boulogne was a gifted composer, and his works, spirited, inventive and charming, are far more reminiscent of Haydn than Mozart. He was a superb craftsman, too, whose command of the formal dimensions of composition was easily on par with the best of his colleagues. Certainly, he was a far more imaginative composer than his contemporaries, Johann Christian Bach or the notorious Salieri. The Violin Concerto in D, ably played by Linda Melsted, is a boisterous, rustic affair, while the G major Symphony, composed in 1779, couldn't be more affecting, especially the haunting middle movement [ listen track 11, 0:00-1:24 ]. Boulogne had one odd habit, though; without exception, the ending of each piece is inexplicably abrupt, as if he couldn't quite decide how to wind down an idea and invest in it the kind of formal finality that makes its conclusion seem inevitable [ listen track 9, 2:58-4:16 The Tafelmusik Orchestra is a Canadian period instruments ensemble, and one reasonably well-versed in historical performance practices. But if there is a significant fault that so often infects such ensembles, including this one, it's a reluctance to engage the music for its gustiness and vigor, while favoring a certain affective politeness. To overestimate discretion and decorum in the music of this period at the expense of vigorous articulation and bold affect is not only to do it a disservice, but also historically inaccurate, as the contemporary evidence so ably demonstrates. To hear the music of Boulogne anew in the hands of the great period instrument ensembles, such as Sarasa or Les Arts Florissants would be most welcome, and might even serve to attract the greater public attention it deserves.

Contact December 25 Saint George Scupltor Joseph Boulogne "Chevalier de Saint-Georges" was born on Christmas Day, 1745.  He was an African-French classic music conductor, composer, musician, and military officer. Boulogne was born on the West Indies island of Guadeloupe, where his mother Nanon was a slave.  Boulogne’s father was a Frenchman, George de Bologne Saint-Georges.  He owned the plantation on which Joseph spent his early childhood. The word "Chevalier" means "Knight" in French.  It was a title of nobility in the Kingdom of France.  Joseph could not inherit his father's status as a member of the nobility, because his mother was an African.  Even so, he was called "Chevalier de Saint-Georges" from a young age.  At age ten Saint-Georges moved to France with his parents.   There he continued his studies in classical music.  He was tutored in violin by Jean-Marie Leclair, and studied composition with Francois-Joseph Gossec.  Saint-Georges also spent six years at the boarding school of Texier de La Boessiere, a master of arms.  Athletics and fencing brought him a reputation at an early age.  He swam across the River Seine in winter with one arm tied behind his back.  As an adult he signed his surname "Saint-George" and that became the normal spelling in French. Saint-Georges’ military career began in 1761 as an officer in the King's Guard.
