Margaret and Marie
March 20, 1998 by Darrell Hookey You would think they would have been friends. Marie Joussaye Fotheringham was an eloquent champion of women's rights who had come to Dawson in 1903 to shed light on the turmoil of the working woman. Margaret Mitchell had already assumed those rights and asserted them over any other miner who tried to best her in the rough and ready trade of mining claims. She once spent a night in jail after asserting a lantern upside the head of a male colleague. Marie boasted of royal connections in London and the elite of Toronto and Vancouver. It was rumored she was a cousin to Lord Strathcona and a successful author of a book of poetry. Margaret was one of the first and most successful women gold miners in Dawson history. She arrived via the Trail of '98 and earned the title of "The Quartz Queen". Yet Marie found Margaret to be as crude as a ... well, as crude as a miner. And Margaret found Marie to be wanting in character. It was Marie's less-than-legal financial dealings that earned the ire of Margaret. And it was Margaret's amazing ability to feed and hold a grudge for four years that found one of these pioneer women chasing the other through a dark Dawson City street in 1908. The intended weapon was a lantern.

I trust any Robinson searcher looks at Robertson, Robison, and Robeson entries as well; it doesn't seem there was any consistent spelling for many of these families before the 1900s. Add handwriting characteristics, transcription errors, variations in pronunciation and its effect on records, and you know that all spellings should be considered. These entries seem all to be indexed as Robinson but may note "Robeson" or "Robison" beside the entry. I don't have further info on these people; I'm just beginning to get into this name in NC. 5.1 Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase
G6PD catalyses the first committed step of the pentose phosphate pathway, converting glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) to 6-phosphoglucono-_-lactone with the reduction of NADP+ to NADPH. The enzyme in all species has an important role in the provision of the reduced coenzyme NADPH. The pathway contributes towards the provision of ribose sugars for nucleic acid synthesis and towards fatty acid synthesis. The X-linked human enzyme has a vital role in the erythrocyte since this pathway provides the NADPH required in protection against oxidative stress. In certain bacteria, including Leuconostoc mesenteroides, the enzyme contributes to catabolic as well as synthetic pathways; in this mode NAD+ is employed and NADH generated rather than NADPH. Our studies of both the human enzyme and the enzyme from L. mesenteroides have progressed this year. There are now 34 sequences of G6PD from a wide range of species. The eight residue peptide originally recognised as essential, RIDHYLGK (residues 175-182 in the L. mesenteroides enzyme; 198-205 in human), remains conserved as does the arginine important for NADP binding (46; 72), certain residues of the coenzyme binding finger-print, GxxGDLx (12-18; 38-44) and the Glu-Lys-Pro triplet (147-149; 170-172) thought to play a role in substrate binding. G6PD from L. mesenteroides

Please do not ask me any questions concerning this list of names or placenames. I have no other information on any people listed, I am not researching any of these names. - Thank you. There are in all 211 entries for men in the Marriage Licence Bonds for the Diocese of Ossory, 1739-1804 (Irish Genealogist, 1990-93, Vol. 8, Ed. Raymond Refausse)whose address can easily be identified as being located in Co. Laois (Queen's county in the Marriage Licence Bonds of the Diocese of Ossory. Some of these were bonded to women who also had addresses easily identified as being in the same county, because of this there are some similarities between the Laois Men and Laois Women lists. These tables are indexed alphabetically by the surname of the man/Groom. Protestant can be taken to cover all religions other than Roman Catholic. In those instances in any column where there is a row of 'X' then the information relative to that person for that column was not listed. I have given each entry on these tables a number and listed the entries relative to the men separately from those of the women inorder to be able to fit my tables as best as possible to the viewing screen. If you find an entry in the tables relating to any man and match up the number beside his name with an entry in the tables relating to women then you will have whatever information there is on that couple.

Sexism, Racism, and Music,"
by Jeannie Pool
as published in the ILWC Journal, October 1994.
The following is an excerpt of an interview conducted by music historian and producer Jeannie Pool with pianist Althea Waites about the release of Althea's new compact disc, BLACK DIAMONDS, ALTHEA WAITES PLAYS PIANO MUSIC BY AFRICANAMERICAN COMPOSERS on Cambria Master Recordings (CD1097). The entire interview was broadcast on KPFK, Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles, May 3, 1993. Althea Waites is well known for her performances in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Russia and was honored by the National Association of Composers/USA for her commitment to performing music by American composers. She was also presented with a Certificate of Honor by the International Congress on Women in Music for her advocacy of women's music. Many thanks to Lenore Coffman for her work on the tape transcription.
Jeannie Pool: There have been many changes in your life recently?,
Althea Waites: Oh, I should say. Lots of things have been happening, and they're all good. When you start to make changes in your life, especially choices that are going to impact on a lot of other things for your future, you realize how important it is for you to make those choices and also to do them with a lot of information.

"WOMR 92.1 FM, Provincetown, Massachusetts,"
by Jeanne Brossart and Canary Burton
as published in the IAWM Journal , February 1997, pp. 45-46.
WOMR is one of the few remaining grass roots, non-commercial, public-access, independent community radio stations in the country. In existence for nearly 15 years, this 6000-watt station broadcasts at 92.1 FM out of Provincetown, covering most of Cape Cod and the South Shore of Massachusetts. WOMR is staffed by some 70 volunteers who carefully plan all their own programs, whether spoken word or music. The youngest programmer is now a seasoned DJ of 11, but started at age 9. The oldest is 82. WOMR depends entirely on listener contributions and local business underwriting for its budget and on promotion copies of recordings for its library. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers who write to composers, performers and record companies requesting music, the station has a large and highly inclusive selection. The dozen or so spoken-word programs produced in-house cover the arts, theater, politics, spirituality and cultural issues. Music not heard on commercial stations spans the world of sound: folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass, world beat, country, celtic, rock, children's music, marching band (probably the only program of its kind in the USA) and classical. Classical programs air Sunday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm with a different host and a unique flavor each day. In addition to the six three-hour programs, Canary Burton, who is a composer herself, hosts "The Latest Score" every Friday afternoon at four. On air for only one hour, Canary, flying by the seat of her pants, chooses edgy, envelope-pushing classical music to shock, inform and amuse her audience. Nothing she plays sounds remotely like "new age"music, and music with a dramatic architecture is dominant. Although she tries to keep the show equal regarding sex, she would like include more compositions by women and would appreciate CDs and tapes. Traditional instruments, voice, synthesizer, tape and electroacoustic compositions twenty years old or less are of particular interest.
