Bonds that Make Us Free, Part 36: Affirming Others’ Freedom Sets Us Free
by C. Terry Warner You can see that in an unexpected and, to our ordinary way of thinking, odd way, we owe to the people we are able to forgive a very large debt. No matter how reprehensibly they may have treated us, they have provided us with a gift. The gift is their humanity. Without their humanity, to which we are able to open ourselves, we cannot get ourselves emotionally unstuck no matter how we might try. We cannot do it by denying or repressing our feelings or by willing ourselves to feel differently—feelings are subject to our indirect but not our direct control. We are able to do it only by recognizing, respecting, and, yes, revering others as they really are, in the fullness of their humanity and vulnerability. This insight makes connection with a principle we first encountered in Part 6 : We are I-You individuals only insofar as others become fully real to us. We need them in order to become authentic and genuine ourselves. We do this, as we first learned when we talked about yielding to the truth (

The Bonds of Newbury and London THE BONDS OF THE ISLE OF PURBECK. Now I come to the PURBECK BRANCH of the family, the descendants of Robert Bond, the younger brother of Richard Bond, sons of the original Robert and Elizabeth, heiress of the de Earths. This Robert went to Hache Beauchamp in Somerset, where that early John le Bonnd had lived, about a hundred years before. There are no records in between, but it looks likely that some member or members of John le Bonnd's family had settled in Cornwall, that one of them had married Elizabeth de Earth, and that the line of Hache Beauchamp had failed, and that Robert went back to carry it on. Whether this is just what happened or not, he settled there, and in 1431, Henry VI., married the daughter and heiress of Lutton, in the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. Her name is not known. This couple had a son, another Robert. He made an illustrious marriage with Mary, daughter of Sir John Hody of Pillesden in Dorset, who was Chief Justice of England in 1440, and whose son, Sir William Hody, was Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1486. With Mary came wealth. After them came William, born 1455, Denis

About this list: This is by no means the ultimate database of women composers. In fact, this list represents only a tiny fraction of more than 6000 women composers about whom a record exists (e.g. Aaron Cohen's Encyclopedia of Women Composers lists 6,196 women composers). Only composers of classical music whose works have been recorded on compact disc have been included in this database. Composers are listed in alphabetical order; their name is followed by their date of birth and country of origin. Where a link to online resources exists it has also been provided. If you know of a woman composer who meets the above criteria but whose name has been omitted, please write to us

Marriage Bonds of Jackson Co. Marriage Bonds were required by an act of the General Assembly in 1740 and continued until 1868 when marriage licenses were authorized. In order to apply for a marriage, the man had to post a monetary bond to a bondsman in order to prove his good intentions. If a husband abandoned or refused to provide for his family, the bondsman was responsible for them. If it is stated "not returned", it does not necessarily mean that the marriage did not take place, only that the bond or license wasn't returned or the minister or Justice of the Peace didn't complete the clerk's register.

A bond scheme for overseas visitors that has provoked an angry reaction among anti-racist groups could be scrapped. Senior Cabinet Minister Margaret Beckett said the proposal, aimed at controlling the number of people visiting Britain, could be delayed or possibly dropped following widespread opposition.
I think we can find better answers to what are genuinely some difficult problems
Margaret Beckett The system was one of the issues highlighted by Transport and General Workers Union general secretary Bill Morris. Mr Morris accused the government of creating a "climate of fear" with its immigration policy. Writing in the Independent, he said black supporters of the government were losing faith because Labour's policies were "giving life to racists". Mrs Beckett told ITV's Dimbleby programme that the criticised scheme had generated a high level of interest. "I have got lots of constituents who have said to me that they would like there to be a system whereby they can give assurances and back up those assurances if there is doubt about whether some member of their family is just coming on a visit or not," she said.
