Movie industry dealt DVD-cracking blow

A California court has dealt a potentially serious setback to the movie industry's attempt to rid the online world of software that can help break through copy protections on DVDs. The appeals court released a decision Thursday overturning an earlier order that barred hundreds of people from publishing the code for a software program called "DeCSS" online. Posting the code is just like publishing other types of controversial speech and is protected by the constitution, the appellate judges said. "Although the social value of DeCSS may be questionable, it is nonetheless pure speech," the decision reads. "Our respect for the legislature and its enactment of the (trade secrets law) cannot displace our duty to safeguard the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment."
Click Here The decision, while not a final one on the legality of the software program, nevertheless marks a severe blow for the movie industry's legal battle against online threats. Hollywood studios have contended that software that can break through their anti-piracy techniques is simply a tool and does not warrant free-speech protections. A federal judge has agreed with much of that reasoning.

If I tell you that I'll have to kill you: Red Hat fights the DMCA
By John Lettice Published Wednesday 16th October 2002 09:34 GMT Red Hat has struck a small blow against the DMCA, by publishing a security patch which can only be explained fully to people who are not within US jurisdiction. The company's position here seems to be not altogether voluntary - according to a spokesman "it is bizarre, and unfortunately something Red Hat cannot easily do much about," but like it or not Red Hat has been recruited to the campaign to make the DMCA look ridiculous. The patch itself is on the Red Hat site, on this page, and the oddity here can be seen if you go down to the bottom. John Blow received his early musica training as a choirster of the Chapel Royal. He then worked as organist of Westminster Abbey from 1668 to 1679. In 1674 he became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, and he succeeded Pelham Humfrey as Master of the Children; in 1676 he was also organist there. While still active at the Chapel Royal, where he was also named official composer in 1700, he was Almoner and Master of the Choristers at St Paul's Cathedral between 1687 and 1703, and in 1695 he returned to Westminster Abbey to succeed Purcell (who had served his apprenticeship under Blow) as organist.

Biographie
