Introduction (born Paris, 25 October 1838; died Bougival, 3 June 1875). Le Docteur Miracle ; later that year he set out for Italy as holder of the coveted Prix de Rome. During his three years in Rome Bizet began or projected many compositions; only four survive, including the opera buffa Don Procopio (not performed until 1906). Shortly after his return to Paris, in September 1861, his mother died; the composer consoled himself with his parents' maid, by whom he had a son in June 1862. He rejected teaching at the Conservatoire and the temptation to become a concert pianist, and completed his obligations under the terms of the Prix de Rome. The last of these, a one-act La guzla de l'emir Bizet completed it in four months. It was produced in September 1863, but met with a generally cool reception: an uneven work, with stiff characterization, it is notable for the skilful scoring of its exotic numbers. In the ensuing years Bizet earned a living arranging other composers' music and giving piano lessons. Not until December 1867 was another opera staged - La jolie fille de Perth , which shows a surer dramatic mastery than despite an inept libretto. It received a good press but had only 18 performances.

http://www.devine-ent.com/shows/composers/bizet-bio.shtml
The Life and Times of Georges Bizet He was plagued by a nervous temperament and was prey to insomnia, and he often expressed regret at what seemed to him to be uncontrollable argumentativeness. His frame of mind wasn't improved by an unremitting series of personal and professional setbacks following his return to France in 1860. Crushed at his mother's death at age 45, he threw himself into composing "Les Pecheurs de perles", which was met with a cool reception in 1863; Bizet - chafed then indeed, throughout his career at his critics' inability or unwillingness to embrace his originality. In today's parlance, he wasn't good at "networking," insisting on winning commissions or jobs at the Opera Comique on his own merits, not connections. The result was that, by 1864, he was reduced to what he regarded as "hack work": teaching piano and acting as an accompanist at rehearsals of others' compositions. When the conservative minded directors of the Opera rejected his rewrite of "Ivan IV", he began to develop a persecution complex. A move to the countryside outside Paris improved his mood immensely, as did his marriage in 1869 to Genevieve Halevy, the 20 year old daughter of composer Fromental Halevy. The couple took up residence in Paris's Montmartre district; among their neighbours were the pianists Henri Ravina and Elie Miriam Delaborde. Delaborde a friend of Manet's, an accomplished pianist in his own right, a passionate collector of cockatoos and parrots, a fencer, bon vivant and ladies' man became particularly close companion, and Bizet would often relax at Delaborde's studio.

Georges Bizet (1838 - 1875) Geores Bizet is best known for his operatic masterpiece, Carmen. Not so well known is the fact that he died from a heart attack only a few months after its first performance at the age of 36. Death at such a young age immediately reminds us of Mozart Mendelssohn and Schubert . His life parallels these composers also in the sense that he was yet another musical prodigy whose ability, encouraged by his musical parents, was exceptional. Despite being against the rules, he was admitted into the Paris Conservatory at the phenomenal age of 9! He was born in Paris and originally registered under the name Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, but then baptised as Georges by which name he was always to be known. With the exception of a few years in Rome, he stayed in or near Paris for most of his life. At the Conservatory he studied under many great musicians including professor Jacques Halévy. The Halévy family were to have quite an impact on Bizet's life, not least the fact that he was later to marry the professor's daughter Geneviéve and father a son Jaques, perhaps named after his grandfather. Continuing his precocious youth, he composed his first Symphony (in C) at age 17 (modelled closely on Gounod's Symphony No. 1 in D). Then in 1857 having previously won several prizes at the Conservatoire, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome. When the Franco-Prussian war broke out in 1870, although exempt from national service as a Priz de Rome winner, Bizet nevertheless enlisted in the National Guard. Although many of his coutrymen and fellow musicians were highly nationlistic in their approach to the war, Bizet was far more down-to-earth in his understanding of the real horrors of war. Again we see a realism in his outlook on life which also manifested itself in his operatic story-telling.

COMPOSERS
GEORGES BIZET
Born: October 25, 1838. Paris, France
Died: June 3, 1875. Bougival, France
French opera composer. Bizet is best known for his opera Carmen

Georges Bizet's life was short and full of difficulties, a fact that seems at odds with the enduring success of his final work, Carmen . Bizet was born into a musical family, where he received a good early training that led to his entrance into the Paris Conservatory at the age of nine. Bizet did well in his studies, developing his skills as a pianist (he impressed Franz Liszt with his playing) and as a composer. At the age of seventeen he composed his Symphony in C , a meticulous and effervescent work that was never heard until 1935. His studies at the conservatory were capped in 1858 with his receipt of the Prix de Rome, which allowed Bizet three years of financial support to concentrate on composition.
Bizet's years in Rome were not very productive, and resulted in few works only four of which survive. One, his opera Don Procopio , was not produced until 1906. Upon his return to Paris he turned down a teaching position at the conservatory, wishing instead to concentrate on his writing. He found moderate success in 1863 with his opera , but his next work, La jolie fille de Perth , saw only eighteen performances.

Born in Paris, Bizet won early success as a composer and as a prodigious pianist. He was a brilliantly successful student, but his later career was variable and he had great difficulty in developing his own personal style. He is now best known for his famous opera "Carmen" which was performed shortly before he died. He left a number of unfinished stage works. Georges Bizet Works
Bizet's last opera, "Carmen", is among the most famous of all operas with its realistic Spanish setting and dramatic intensity. Concert audiences will be familiar with his two concert suites drawn from the opera. MIDI FILE - from "Carmen":

Bizet, Georges (Alexandre-César-Léopold)
* 25. Okt. 1838 in Paris
