King's Chapel Tuesday Noon Hour Recitals in association with Garden State Sacred Harp Singers, Inc. presents Billings 2000 The Bicentennial Commemoration a celebration of the life and work of Colonial and Federal America's preeminent composer WILLIAM BILLINGS held in observance of the 200th anniversary of his death Tuesday, September 26, 2000 King's Chapel Tremont and School Streets Boston, Massachusetts On 59 evenings from January 18 to August 9, 1786, at a pay of 12 shillings per session, William Billings taught singing at King's Chapel to "such persons of both sexes as incline to sing psalm-tunes." On Tuesday, December 21, 1790 at 3 o'clock, during a period when the composer was suffering considerable financial distress, a concert of sacred music, encompassing both instrumental and vocal music, was held there for his benefit, with tickets selling for 2 shillings each. Billings died in Boston exactly two hundred years before the date of our commemoration, on September 26, 1800. NB The singing on September 26, 2000 will be led, in the spirit of a traditional American singing school, by a distinguished group of choral music, early music, American music, and psalmody specialistsand by anyone else who volunteers (this means you!).

Originally a tanner, he studied music on his own and became one of the earliest professional musicians in the Colonies. After publishing his first collection of church music, the New England Psalm Singer of 1770 (engraved by Paul Revere), he pursued in Boston a career of composing, reforming church music, and starting musical ensembles, all endeavors that considerably improved New England musical life. His anthems were primitive in technique but vigorous and individual in sound. He founded the continent's first singing class in Stoughton, Mass., (1774) and the first church choir as well. His "Chester," with its text "Let tyrants shake their iron rod... New England's God forever reigns," became a favorite of Revolutionary troops and remains his best-known work. Billings is such a fine composer and the performances here are wonderful. Unlike most recordings of this kind, it was not done in either a huge church or a studio but in a smaller, chapel-like setting, the kind of place I imagine people would have been singing Billing when he was writing. This gives it a wonderful quality. Its nice to know there is now another excellent Billings CD along with Paul Hilliers. I also read that this is a concert recording; this may give it a certain lack of "perfection" in terms of the singing always being "just so" and some extraneous sounds, but being live also gives the performances a real immediacy and presence.
