And Other Early American Composers William Billings (1746-1800), is considered by many to be the foremost representative of early American music. Billings was born in Boston on October 7, 1746. Largely self-trained in music, he was a tanner by trade and a friend of such figures of the American Revolution as Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Billings's New England Psalm-Singer (1770), engraved by Revere, was the first collection of music entirely by an American. ( The image above is the frontispiece engraving for New England Psalm-Singer by Paul Revere Especially known among his compositions are his canon (round) "When Jesus Wept," the anthem "David's Lamentation," and the hymn "Chester," written to his own patriotic text and unofficially the national hymn of the American Revolution. William Albert Billings October 21, 1893 - June 7, 1975 "Big Bad Bill Billings" of the St. Thomas Saints Ball Team in the 1920s William Albert Billings (Bill) was born October 21, 1893 in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. He was the youngest of 7 children born to James Albert and Emma Bromell Billings, four of his siblings having died in infancy before he was born. Bill lived with his parents and sisters Gladys Marie and Amelia Caroline until his mother died when he was 11, in 1904. Bill went to work as a young man for the Pere Marquette Railway. He was married in his late teens to Laura Mary (last name unknown), and they had a daughter named Ila Maxine in 1911. Laura Mary died in 1919 in the flu epidemic that ran rampant throughout Canada and the U.S. Bill's step-mother, Matilda, took care of Maxine until he remarried. On April 7, 1920, Bill married Ariel Lavern Watson. Bill and Ariel had 3 children: Ariel Eileen (1921); George William (1923) and Jack Ramon (1925).
