William Billings Born 7 October 1746, Boston.
Died 26 September 1800, Boston. Bizarre of appearance (one-eyed, one-legged, and unkempt) and colorful of career (by turns as tanner, teacher, and civil servant), Billings was America's first major composer. The New-England Psalm-Singer, a collection of 120 vocal works (with frontispiece engraved by Paul Revere), was the first published edition of American music; The Singing Master's Assistant enjoyed immense circulation, in part, owing to its politically inflammatory lyrics. "Chester," Billings's famous and stirring Revolutionary hymn, might well be compared in function and effect to Martin Luther's Ein' feste Burg. Works

The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. A nyone who's done much choral singing has sung William Billings's music. Ask what music came out of Colonial America: we get Billings and little more. Few sophisticated musicians think much of him I love his stuff. Historians have made little effort to know Billings. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians runs to almost 20,000 pages and it gives Billings only a page and a half. Billings was born in Boston in 1747. He was poor and uneducated he supported himself much of the time as a tanner. But he also took up music when he was young and was teaching choral singing by the age of 22. Biographers call him a gargoyle. He was blind in one eye with a short leg and a withered arm. But that's only the beginning. He practiced what a contemporary called "an uncommon negligence of person," and he was hopelessly addicted to tobacco constantly inhaling handfuls of snuff. That may explain why he only lived to the age of 54. He had a stentorian, tobacco-damaged bass voice and he seemed uninterested in any easy beauty of sound. At 24, Billings published his first book of choral pieces. He called it

William Billings
William Billings October 7 September 26 ) ), American choral composer , is regarded as the father of American choral music and hymnody. Billings published numerous songbooks, including The New England Psalm Singer (1770) and The Continental Harmony (1794). Originally a tanner by trade, and lacking formal training in music, Billings created what is now recognized as a uniquely American style. In his prime, Billings propagandized for his music, and for better performance of it, in an endearingly eccentric and enthusiastic prose style. However, the popularity of his music failed to last out his lifetime, and he died in poverty. The Stoughton Musical Society, formed by former students of Billings, has carried on his tradition for over 200 years. As printed in shape notes, Billings's work has also survived in the musical tradition of the Sacred Harp , where his songs continue to be highly favored by many singers. The modern American composer William Schuman featured Billings's American Revolutionary War anthem Chester in his composition New England Triptych

And Other Early American Composers William Billings (1746-1800), is considered by many to be the foremost representative of early American music. Billings was born in Boston on October 7, 1746. Largely self-trained in music, he was a tanner by trade and a friend of such figures of the American Revolution as Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Billings's New England Psalm-Singer (1770), engraved by Revere, was the first collection of music entirely by an American. ( The image above is the frontispiece engraving for New England Psalm-Singer by Paul Revere Especially known among his compositions are his canon (round) "When Jesus Wept," the anthem "David's Lamentation," and the hymn "Chester," written to his own patriotic text and unofficially the national hymn of the American Revolution. Billings died in Boston on September 26, 1800. (Excerpts from an article on William Billings by John H. ABOUT THE PROJECT Sponsored by the University of New Orleans, the project brings together in a letterpress edition all of the extant papers of Sir William Berkeley (1605-1677), governor of Virginia from 1641 to 1652 and 1660 to 1677. The idea for such an undertaking originated in 1986, when Professor Warren M. Billings, the director and editor, began accumulating known Berkeley documents in order to write a book that assessed the governor and his place in the shaping of English North America. Rendition and annotation of texts engaged Professor Billings over the next several years. A second VHS Mellon Research Fellowship, plus a grant-in-aid of research from the American Philosophical Society, allowed him to return to Virginia and England for the purpose of verifying his transcriptions against the original manuscripts. John Van Horne, President of the Library Company of Philadelphia; Virginia Bernhard, Professor of History at the University of St. Thomas, Houston; and Professor John R. Pagan, now dean of the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, read successive segments of the first draft of
