"In the beginning was the Note, and
the note was with God; and
whosoever can reach for that Note,
reach high, and bring it back to
us on earth...and to the extent
of his reach, partakes of the divine." A presence on Broadway, in Hollywood, at Carnegie Hall and the New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein was a major force in twentieth century music. His exuberant and dramatic style caught the heart of America, bringing classical music to thousands of people from diverse backgrounds. More than any American conductor before him, Bernstein expanded the audience of classical music while maintaining a deep artistic integrity.

A brief history of the musical and interview with librettist Betty Comden.
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~mcgoni/onthetown.html
On the Town
After the success of the ballet Fancy Free, the set designer Oliver Smith persuaded Bernstein and Jerry Robbins
to expand it into a musical. Lenny insisted that his friends from the Revuers, Betty Comden and Adolph
Green be brought in to write the book and lyrics. From June to December 1944 On the Town was written with
great seriousness despite the light-hearted tone of the final piece. The competitiveness of the sailors in Fancy
Free was reversed and the women were given more substantial characters. More than twenty musical numbers
were written for the show (three were dropped before the New York premiere) and it made a number of 'firsts'.
It was the first American musical to be composed by a classically trained 'symphonist', broke interracial new
ground by having black and white dancers side by side and was the first show to be bought unseen by a
Hollywood film company. Betty Comden interviewed in 1995 : "It happened in such a complicated way, as everything does. First of all, Jerome Robbins and Leonard
Bernstein had done the ballet 'Fancy Free' and they both became quite famous...Adolph and I were just

29. Candide: The Musical
A synopsis and information on the musical by Lillian Hellman, Richard Wilbur, and leonard bernstein (revised by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim.)
http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/candide_001.html
CANDIDE Purchase The Movie The Cast Album Sheet Music Book by LILLIAN HELLMAN Lyrics by RICHARD WILBUR Music by LEONARD BERNSTEIN A revised one-act version includes a new libretto by HUGH WHEELER and additional lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM CANDIDE was first produced at the Martin Beck Theatre, New York, on December 1, 1956, with Robert Rounseville as "Candide," Max Adrian as "Pangloss," Barbara Cook as "Cunegonde," Louis Edmonds as "Maximilian," and Irra Petina as "Old Lady." A revised one-act version by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim opened at the Chelsea Theatre Centre, Brooklyn, on December 19, 1973. V Making their escape, Candide and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, board a vessel heading for the New World, but, as luck would have it, the vessel is attacked by pirates, and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, is carried off for another round of ravishment. When he arrives in the New World, Candide is surprised to find both Paquette and Maximilian alive and sold into slavery. Candide brings them up-to-date on what has happened and swears that he will rescue Cunegonde once more and marry her. Maximilian, however, is still a Thunder-Ten-Tronck, and furious at the suggestion that his sister should marry a bastard, begins chasing Candide madly. Candide hides behind a statue and, as luck would have it, accidentally knocks the statue over, crushing Maximilian to death instantly.

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) - formidable musician
Although having a huge reputation as an interpreter and composer of classical music, Bernstein is probably most readily associated with musicals in general and West Side Story in particular. This is a modern reworking of the Romeo and Juliet story for stage and film. Full of Latin rhythms the musical manages to have New York gang members sing and dance and yet still seem tough and threatening. Anyone seeing the making of the album of West Side Story with Jose Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa will agree with the description of Bernstein as "formidable" but he was formidable also in the sense of the breadth of his musical taste and experience and the total dedication to his art. Bernstein was a hard-working musician, starting out initially as a pianist. He studied at Harvard University where was coached by Walter Piston and Aaron Copland (with whom he formed a life-long musical association). Then at Tanglewood Music Centre he studied with Serge Koussevitzky. These influences led him from full-time performing into the art of composing. He became assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where a particular event gave him instant acclaim and a widespread following. Bruno Walter was to conduct a significant concert by the orchestra which was to be broadcast live on Radio. Walter was unable to fulfil this engagement and the principle conductor (Artur Rodzinski, who had appointed Bernstein) was away, and so Bernstein was called upon to fill in. He later became the orchestra's musical director, and was to become one of the foremost conductors of the day, leading orchestras throughout the world and gaining a reputation for his interpretations of composers such as

38. PBS - Leroy Anderson - Walter Piston
PBS article includes biography, quotes from Leroy Anderson and leonard bernstein, compliments on his teaching ability, and mention of his textbooks.
http://www.pbs.org/sleighride/Biography/Walter_Piston.htm
Walter Piston, Harvard Professor Leroy Anderson recounted in a 1953 interview for the Boston Sunday Post how Piston taught him to be objective:
"The general tendency of a composer is to fall in love with what he does. Piston always advised us to listen to our compositions as though someone else had written them. My biggest disappointment came the day he handed me back one of my pieces with the comment that it sounded like improvisation. I was crushed...But he was right. Every church organist improvises and that was my trouble. I had been playing the organ at the East Congregational Church in Milton for $10 a Sunday and sure enough, I had fallen into the habit of improvising to fill the gaps that always occurred. Piston's advice was good and I've never forgotten it."
Walter Piston, composer and educator, taught at Harvard for 34 years, from 1926 to 1960. During this time scores of eminent composers and musicologists studied with him, most notably Leonard Bernstein, Eliot Carter and Leroy Anderson.
Bernstein said of Piston "Everything he taught me has stuck - especially the example of his highly refined ear, and his non-pedantic approach to such academic subjects as fugue...I love his own music (and still do) although I cannot say that I was particularly influenced by it stylistically (as I was by Copland) - except in the matter of the highest standards of craftsmanship and clarity of sonic intention".

, conductor, composer, pianist, author, and educator. Bernstein, born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, showed musical talent at a young age. He graduated from Harvard University, where he studied with Edward Burlingame Hill and Walter Piston, and continued his studies with Fritz Reiner at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. During the summers of 1940 and 1941, he worked at Tanglewood with Serge Koussevitzky, who became his mentor. In 1943, he became assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic. On November 14, 1943, Bernstein stepped in for the ailing Bruno Walter to conduct a nationally broadcast Philharmonic program. His vigorous, charismatic, and thoroughly prepared performance brought him overnight fame. Bernstein's First Symphony, subtitled Jeremiah, was chosen by the New York Music Critics' Circle as the best new American orchestral work of 1943-1944. That same season, his ballet, Fancy Free
