Which Berlioz Requiem Recording Should I Buy?
Of the 44 recordings that I now own of Berlioz' Grande Messe des morts, my favorite in some ways is the one with Jean Fournet conducting the Grand Orchestra of Radio-Paris and the Emile Passani Choir, recorded in occupied Paris more than 50 years ago, in September 1943. This recording, the first to be made, was issued on 78s in Britain and the U.S. sometime around 1948, and later issued on LPs. The sound is rather dim and the closely-miked choir is short of men (understandable given the tough times in France), and there is a slight cut in the Sanctus (essentially, the omission of a written-out repeat). Nevertheless, it is a very passionate reading. Interestingly, it was recorded at St. Eustache, where Berlioz himself had led some performances back in the 1840s. It received a fresh transfer from carefully-preserved original 78 RPM pressings and was reissued in 1998 as Dante-Lys 319-321 in a 3-CD box with Fournet's 1942 recording of

Notes on Berlioz' "La Damnation de Faust"
The real Faust
Doctor Johannes Faust lived at the beginning of the 16th century. He was a medical practitioner and had studied astrology and alchemy as well as philosophy. He must have travelled a lot as there were reports of him from all German regions. Rumours and legends about him began while he was still alive. It was said that he was calling up the dead and practicing black magic. The exact date and the circumstances of his dead are unknown, most likely he was murdered. With his dead (about 1540) the story set in that he had made a pact with the devil.
Early works
One of the earliest collections of legends about Faust was published in 1587 by J. Spies, the Historia von Doctor J. Faustus . Faust had made a pact with the devil. The latter served Faust with his magic to provide him with riches, knowledge, and pleasures. While Faust would lose his soul after his death. This story was translated into all European languages. Soon in England C. Marlowe wrote his famous play

Louis-Hector Berlioz
Died Monday, March 8, 1869, at Paris, aged 65yr 2m 25d English version Instant but possibly unreliable translation into French! Born in 1803, Berlioz won early success by winning the Prix de Rome in 1830 and with the first performance of his Symphonie Fantastique Benvenuto Cellini Berlioz was therefore forced to concentrate on symphonic, concert, and choral music, and to write newspaper reviews to support himself financially, eventually becoming embittered by the enforced servitude and failure to be accepted by the musical public of Paris. His greatest opera, The Trojans Berlioz stands virtually on his own, since aside from friendships with many of the German romantic composers of his era, such as Liszt, Mendelssohn and Wagner, he shared little in common with them, and wrote music completely unlike any of his contemporaries in France; he had few pupils, and founded no school of composers writing in his style, as it was too individual to easily be assimilated, although the Russian Five, Mussorgsky especially, used Berlioz as a model for orchestration.

I discovered him at the late age of 18, and over the last few years I have explored his world with great excitement and amazement. Why hadn't I heard of him before? Some of you may ask the same question. Well, I think that there are several answers. There is no doubt that he has been largely misunderstood by much of the musical public, and until recently, you would be very lucky to here any work of his except for the Symphonie Fantastique.

An interview by David Cairns

(A Media Partner of FrenchCulture.org)
The following interview of Sir Colin Davis by award-winning Berlioz biographer David Cairns appeared in the August 2001 issue of Gramophone magazine. Over 40 years of championing French composer Hector Berlioz has finally paid off for Sir Colin Davis, with a stunning live Les Troyens. He compares notes with Berlioz biographer David Cairns. He does agree, though, that the Barbican performances and the recording taken from them have something special. 'I do believe there's a big advantage in live recording. The tension in the recording studio is not the same. There is tension, but it very seldom approaches the exhilaration of performing before a public in a concert hall where nobody can stop to correct anything and you can't go and listen to what you've just done and come back and try to do better: it's now or never, and you squander all you have on the task before you. I think that must produce better results.' He speaks of the 'amazing freedom' he experienced as a result. 'I felt: I really love this piece and I'm beginning to know something about it, and I shall never be able to conduct better than I am now, so let's let it all loose and see what happens. And what happened was that all the people singing got incredibly excited, the orchestra was, too, and did everything an orchestra can to show off its prowess, and the general excitement of dealing with this masterpiece took over. Those intricate rhythms, those finales that go at such a pace - they're very difficult. To get them right and get them to go like that shows the virtuosity of everyone involved.'

Hector Berlioz

    Hector Berlioz
Hector Berlioz was the first of the great Romantics, and it is Romanticism that animates his music and runs riot throughout his life. Above all, he was a man of passion. What he hated, he grasped firmly by the hair; what he loved, he almost crushed in his fervor. The supreme romance in his life stimulated the creation of his first major composition, the autobiographical Symphonie Fantastique. And the story it tells is of his obsessive romance with the Irish actress Harriet Smithson. To simply say that he fell in love would be like saying that the ocean has some water in it. Rather, it was a force of nature that all but drove him out of his mind. Ironically, it was the music itself which ultimately conquered her. Hector's musical embodiment of the supreme love of his life, Harriet Smithson , was the " idee fixe " theme of the autobiographical Symphonie Fantastique
