    Luciano Berio (1925-2003)
One of Italy's greatest avant-garde composers, Luciano Berio was born in 1925 to a musical family that eagerly guided him into the world of composition. He studied at Milan until 1951, and then set upon a long career of living alternately in Italy and the United States, studying under various modernist masters and forging his own unique style. In 1950 he married American singer Cathy Berberian, and many of his pieces are written for her voice. From 1955 to 1960, he directed the "Studio di Fonologia Musicale," a center for electronic music which he and Bruno Maderna had founded at RAI (Italian Radio). After another decade of living in America, he returned to Italy and founded "Centro Tempo Reale," an institute for music research which drew together musicians and computer science experts in order to advance and explore new forms of composition.
Of the same generation as Cage, Boulez and Stockhausen, Berio pioneered modernism in music and the use of electronics to explore new musical frontiers. He employed a myriad of idioms and techniques during his long and prolific career, specializing in works for the voice, "chance" music, serialism, electronic music, and most famously, a series of virtuoso solo pieces called "Sequenzia." Berio was also fascinated with literature, particularly twentieth century modernism and postmodernism. Italo Calvino wrote the text for two of Berio's stage works, and his work in Italian radio led him to a friendship with Umberto Eco. It was perhaps only natural that he should turn to Joyce and Beckett for musical inspiration.

Born into a musical family in 1925, Luciano Berio's first teacher was his father. At the Milan Conservatoire, he studied composition under Paribene and Ghedini, and orchestral conducting under Votto and Giulini. Dallapicolla was also to play an important part in his training.
In 1955 he founded, together with his friend Bruno Maderna, the studio of phonology of the RAI in Milan, where Luigi Nono soon joined them. This was the era of the first electro-acoustic discoveries (Thema / Omaggio a Joyce, 1958, and Allez-Hop, based on a text by Calvino, 1959). Berio confirmed his reputation as a pioneer, an explorer. Between 1960 and 1972, he gave many classes in Darmstadt, Darlington, at Mill's College, at Harvard, at The Juilliard School, and at Columbia University. At the same time, he was becoming interested in rock and folk music, devoting essays to these forms, and frequently mingling them with his own compositions. The decade produced such works as Visage (The Face), Passagio, Folk Songs (1964, first version), Laborintus II, the Sequenza series: works which seem impregnated with all living forms.

    ~ Biography ~
With Bruno Maderna, Berio is one of the founders of the Centro di Fonologia Musicale of Italian Radio Rai in Milano (1954), which was born in the fervent atmosphere of the post-war period not long after those in Cologne and Paris. Luciano Berio was formed by the Conservatory of Milan under Ghedini, and in the United States under Dallapiccola. Ha kept courses of composition in Darmstadt, Darlington (Summer School), California (Mills College), and at the Harvard University and Juilliard School in New York (1965-71); he also worked at the Columbia University. In 1975 he was head of a department of IRCAM in Paris. The use of electronic music ("Thema", "Différences", "Momenti", "Visage") influenced the study of traditional music produced by Berio which can be seen in the wide range of sound resources he uses, in the means of communication and the variation of musical languages he uses, drawing often from Folk and pop music (see Beatles).

T he Living Composers Project Berio Luciano (b. October 24, 1925, Oneglia [now Imperia] - d. May 27, 2003, Rome). Renowned Italian composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, piano, and electroacoustic works that have been performed very successfully across the world, and that have been widely recorded. Mr. Berio studied initially with his grandfather Adolfo and father Ernesto, who were both organists and composers, and he quickly developed an interest in the piano. In 1944, he was summoned for military service, and suffered a hand injury that ended his career as a pianist. After the war, he studied counterpoint with Giulio Cesare Paribeni and composition with Giorgio Federico Ghedini at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan from 1946-51, followed by a Koussevitzky Foundation scholarship, which allowed him to receive lessons in serialism from Luigi Dallapiccola at Tanglewood in 1952. Also in 1952, he was in attendance at the first American concert of electronic music, given in New York by Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky. In 1953, with Bruno Maderna, he founded the Studio di fonologia musicale at Milan Radio for electronic music, and he was its director until 1959. Also with Maderna, he founded the avant-garde journal Incontri Musicali , and from 1956-59 was both its editor and the organizer of the same-named concert series.
