A lthough Arthur Leslie Benjamin was born in Sydney on the 18th of September 1893, he spent only the first three years of his life in that city. In 1896 he and his parents, Abraham Benjamin and his wife Amelia, moved to Brisbane where he was educated at Bowen House School and Brisbane Grammar School. Abraham was a commission agent and Amelia was a competent amateur pianist whose playing was often enjoyed from under the piano by the infant composer. At the age of six he made his first public appearance as a pianist and his formal musical training began three years later with George Sampson, the Brisbane city organist. In 1907 he accompanied his parents on a tour of the Continent, taking several lessons with Frederic Cliffe in London. In 1911, at the age of eighteen, he returned to England to begin his training at the Royal College of Music. According to Herbert Howells, the young Australian already He studied harmony and counterpoint with Thomas Dunhill, whom he had earlier met in Brisbane, and piano with Frederic Cliffe, quickly gaining a reputation as one of the brightest young talents at the College. In 1912 he won an open scholarship to continue his studies, after being encouraged by Cliffe to resume his composing (Benjamin hadn’t "written a note in years") and try out for one. The circumstances were later described in Benjamin’s sadly unfinished autobiography with a touch of the trademark embroidery–

However, on transferring to the UK in 1949 to represent a large Australian pharmaceutical group, he entered on the two further phases of his career – as a successful playing member for Buckinghamshire and as a London administrator for major sporting and Services organisations. Barnett first played for the minor county in 1951 and continued to do so as often as business pressures permitted until final retirement in 1964, then aged 56. In one memorable season – 1952– Barnett supplemented his own first-rate batting and wicket-keeping with inspiring captaincy, Buckinghamshire being the first county side, other than a Second Eleven, to win the Championship since 1946. MP systems are capable of delivering accurate and controllable motion in the micro-metre to sub-micrometre range. Conventional mechanisms, which are often composed of rigid links with pinned connections are prone to friction, backlash and stiction, which are magnified at small displacements. As such MP systems utilize a new structure known as the compliant mechanism. The structure of most compliant mechanisms is based on conventional mechanisms; however they are monolithic devices which utilize flexible elements, instead of pins, to transform the input to a useful output position. One common flexible element found in compliant mechanisms is the right circular flexure hinge. The seminal work on flexure hinges was done by Paros and Weisbord(1965), the basis of which was to calculate compliance (the reciprocal of stiffness) in order to characterize the behaviour of the hinge when loaded. However they essentially modelled the flexure hinge as a 1-D beam, when it is in fact 3-D in nature. Researchers completing finite element models of MP systems and flexure hinges have extended the model to 2-D elements, still resulting in poor results when compared to experimental data.
