And the pronounces youthful character of the work id based principally on themetic song-like elements whose lively pulse-beat and spontaneously imaginative counterpoint have an exceptional attraction for listeners. The first performance of the Piano Quintet, played by professors of the Music School with the composer at the piano, did not make much of an impression on the audience. Later, however, the work did receive the wide acceptance to which it was entitled.

George Hurst and his Bournemouth players certainly impart a vigor and passion to this work. They quite ably fight for elbow room in a crowded field and will attract attention, especially considering Naxos's low price. I must confess I have a fondness for the Monteux/LSO recording from 1958, though, recently re-released by London, coupled with an excellent Karajan rendition of The Planets . I do wish Hurst's reading of the Nimrod Dorabella , less urgent. The seventh variation ( Troyte ) is powerful and spirited and the twelfth ( B.G.N. ) is beautifully rendered. Despite the noted reservations, this is an impressive effort, the orchestra actually sounding quite in the league with England's best. The other two works, In The South , a substantial piece in its own right, and the Coronation March , are rendered with the same commitment and musical acumen. The sound is a little distant but decent enough. Keith Anderson's notes are full of pertinent information and insights.

Richard Wagner, Music: History, Composers, And Performers, Biographies
Related Category: Music: History, Composers, And Performers, Biographies Wagner's operas represent the fullest musical and theatrical expression of German romanticism. His ideas exerted a profound influence on the work of later composers. For the principle of sharply differentiated recitative and aria, Wagner substituted his "endless melody" and his Sprechgesang [sung speech], calling his operas music-dramas to signify the complete union of music and drama that he sought to achieve. He thought that music could not develop further with the resources it had employed since Beethoven's time, and he maintained that the music of the future must be part of a synthesis of the arts. Adapting German mythology to his dramatic requirements, Wagner applied to it an increased emotional intensity, derived from the harmonic complexity and power of Beethoven's music, to produce what he termed a "complete art work." He achieved a remarkable dramatic unity due in part to his development of the leitmotif, a brief passage or fragment of music used to characterize an episode or person and brought in at will to recall it to the audience. At the same time, Wagner greatly increased the flexibility and variety of his orchestral accompaniments. He was responsible for the productions of his works from libretti to details of sets and costumes.
