Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes Béla Bartók (1881-1945) String Quartet No. 2 Op. 17 Sz. 67 (1917) Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet and Piano (1938) Rumanian Folk Dances (1915) and Sonatina (1915) Béla Bartók (1881-1945) String Quartet No. 2 Op. 17 Sz. 67 (1917) "The tragedy of Bartók was not only the lifelong struggle with poor health and constantly recurring financial difficulties, but also the neglect of his works, the ridicule of the press, and the lack of response of the audience on those rare occasions when he heard his works performed. This man whose music had an elemental sweep, barbaric rhythms, and penetrating force, never weighed more than 116 pounds, and sometimes as little as 87. His slow, even, measured walk was characteristic of his personality . When he came out on the Carnegie Hall stage, with delicate steps, to receive the ovation at the American premiere of his Violin Concerto, one New York newspaper said that he looked like a botany professor from a girls college. But the small and fragile body was endowed with an iron and an uncompromising character. Although he spoke deliberately, with a soft voice, he could say a great deal without using an unnecessary or unimportant word. This mild-mannered composer refused to utter a word he did not believe. He was eminently correct in his attitude toward others and expected the same in return. But he was never as severe with others as he was with himself.

Béla Bartók
Béla Bartók March 25 September 26 ) was a composer pianist and collector of East European folk music ethnomusicology Bartók was born in Nagyszentmiklos, Hungary (now Sînnicolau Mare, Romania ). He was taught music by his mother at an early age and he made his first public appearance as a pianist at the age of ten. He later studied piano under Istvan Thoman and composition under Hans Koessler at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest . There he met Zoltan Kodaly and together they collected folk music from the region. This was to have a major impact on his style. Previously, Bartók's idea of Hungarian folk music was derived from the gypsy melodies to be found in the works of Franz Liszt , and in 1903 Bartók had written a large orchestral work, Kossuth which incorporated such melodies. Upon discovering peasant folk song, which Bartók regarded as true Hungarian folk music, he began to incorporate folk songs into his own compositions and write original folk-like tunes, as well as frequently using folksy rhythmic figures. This new style emerged over the next few years. Bartók was building a career for himself as a pianist, when in 1907 he landed a job as piano professor at the Royal Academy. This allowed him to stay in Hungary rather than having to tour Europe as a pianist, and also allowed him to collect more folk songs. His large scale orchestral works were still in the manner of

http://www.idg.hu/expo/opera/bbcd/e1220100.htm
I was born on March 25th 1881 in Yugoslavia ), and when I was six years old, I began taking piano lessons from my mother. My father , who was the director of an agricultural school, had within him a not inconsiderable talent for music. He played the piano, organised an amateur orchestra, learned the cello in order to be able to play as a cellist in the orchestra, and even attempted to compose dance music. I was eight years old when he died. After his death, my mother Beszterce (in Transylvania, now annexed to Romania), and finally in 1893, we moved to Pozsony (now annexed to Czechoslovakia After I had finished my school studies (for piano) and Hans Koessler (for composition) at the Royal Hungarian Music Academy. I stayed there from 1899 to 1903. Hardly had I arrived in Budapest when I immersed myself in the study of those works of Richard Wagner which I did not then know ( The Ring Tristan Die Meistersinger ) as well as the orchestral works of Liszt. My own creative work, however, lay fallow during this period. I had left the Brahms style behind, but not even via Wagner and Liszt was I able to locate the long desired new path. (I had at that time not truly understood Liszt's importance for the development of musical art, and I was only seeing the surface of his works.) As a result of this, I hardly put pen to paper for two years, and I was known at the Academy for being simply a splendid pianist. It was the first Budapest performance of Thus Spake Zarathustra in 1902, which roused me like a lightning stroke from this stagnation. This work, which was received with horror by most of the musicians in Budapest, filled me with the greatest enthusiasm: I had finally glimpsed a direction in which the new was hidden. I threw myself into the study of Strauss's works and I began composing again. There was another event of decisive importance in my development: at this time in Hungary the well-known nationalist political movement started, whose influence made itself felt in the arts as well. This meant that something truly Hungarian had to be created within the field of music as well. This idea fascinated me, too, and drew my attention to the study of our folk music, that is, to the study of what at that time was regarded as Hungarian folk music.
