Open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.
"I am going to serve only one aim: the weal of the Hungarian nation and country."
The visitor entering the Memorial House is received by Bartok Bela's magnificent quotation, which was his professed creed all his life. Bartok Bela lived and composed in this building between 1932 and 1940. This being the last residence in Hungary of the great composer, the Metropolitan Council set up in it the Bartok Memorial House, which was opened to the public on 25th March, 1981, on the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Bartok Bela. The villa built in 1924 was reconstructed as a Memorial House and a home of musical creation according to the design of architect Fazakas Gyorgy. The main entrance decorated with imitation organ- pipes is the work of Munkacsy prize winner goldsmith artist Poposkei Jozsef. In front of the Memorial House can be seen the full size sculpture of Bartok, made by Kossuth prize winner sculptor Varga Imre. In the entrance hall on this floor can be seen a painting of Bartok made by graphic artist Fillenz Istvan.
On the second floor is a permanent exhibition which shows the materials of Bartok Bela's career, summing up his entire oeuvre. The exhibition puts a special emphasis on three significant activities of Bartok, those of the composer, the scholar of folk music, and the performer.

b Nagyszentmiklos, Hungary (now Romania), 25 March 1881
d New York, 26 September 1945, aged sixty-four

His father, director of an agricultural college and a good amateur pianist, died when Bartok was seven. His mother, a schoolteacher, guided his early career. In 1892 the family moved to Pozsony, and there Bartok met Dohnanyi, succeeding him as organist in the Gymnasium Chapel. In 1898 he went to the Budapest Academy of Music, taking a teaching post there from 1907 to 1934. From 1922 he appeared as a concert pianist with great success in Sahburg and London, and paid his first visit to the USA in 1927. He married twice, each time to a young pupil. In 1940 he returned to the USA and stayed there for the rest of his life. He was dogged by ill-health, and the disintegration of his horn eland from World War I onwards affected him mentally and physically.
