Largely self-taught in music, he entered the University of Kazan as a mathematics student. In 1855 he went to St Petersburg and met Glinka, whose spiritual heir he became. In 1862 he organised the founding of the Russian Free School of Music, becoming the father-figure of the 'Mighty Handful' otherwise known as 'The Five' - Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Glazounov and Cui. In 1867 he became principal conductor of the Russian Music Society, and in 1883 director of music at the Imperial Chapel. In 1894 he resigned from this post and spent the rest of his life composing.

Mily Alekseyevich Balakirev Biography Mily Alekseyevich Balakirev was born in Nizhniy Novgorod in 1837. He took lessons at the University of Kazana. When he was 18, he met with the composer Glinka in St. Petersburg. Balakirev influenced the five to go away from musical forms, and use Russian folk melodies as a basis for all of their works. Balakirev helped found the free school of Music in St. Petersburg. In 1969, Balakirev became the director of the Imperial Chapel and Imperial Music Society. His best works include the symphonic poems of Tamara and Russia, and the fantasia for the piano Islamey. He wrote many works for the piano and the voice. Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev June 2 May 29 ) was a Russian composer . He is perhaps better known today for bringing together the composers known as The Five than for his own music. He was born at Nizhny-Novgorod, and had the advantage as a boy of living with Oulibichev, author of a biography of Mozart , who had a private band, and from whom Balakirev obtained a valuable education in music. At eighteen, after a university course in mathematics , he went to Saint Petersburg , full of national ardour, and there made the acquaintance of Mikhail Glinka . Round him gathered César Cui and others, and in the Free School of Music was established. In Balakirev was appointed director of the imperial chapel and conductor of the Imperial Musical Society. His influence as a conductor, and as an organizer of Russian music, give him the place of a founder of a new movement. His works consist largely of songs and collections of folk songs, but include a symphony (first played in England in 1901), two symphonic poems ( Russia and Tamara ), and four overtures, and a number of
