Wilhelm Friedemann Bach
German composer; eldest son of J. S. and Maria Barbara Bach. As a youth he received the best possible musical education from his father, who composed a and the first volume of the Well- Tempered Clavier chiefly for his use. From 1729 to 1733 he studied mathematics and philosophy at Leipzig. In the latter year he accepted a post as organist in Dresden (Sophienkirche), and in 1746 a better position in Halle (Liebfrauenkirche). He accompanied his father on the famous "Musical Offering" visit to Frederick II in 1747. Dissatisfied with employers and salary, Friedemann resigned his Halle post in 1764; he would never again hold a permanent job. After a brief period in Brunswick he moved his family to Berlin in 1774; upon his death he left a destitute widow and child. He composed more than forty keyboard works, seven concertos, chamber music, ten symphonies, thirty-three sacred cantatas, other vocal works.
Wilhelm Friedemann was a gifted organist and composer whose life ended in failure and poverty because he could not adjust to the contemporary requirements for a successful music career. Some of his works are conservative in style, like those of his great father and teacher; others pay tribute to the fashionable style gallant;

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach
The eldest son of J. S. Bach , Wilhelm studied composition and organ with his father and at Thomasschule in Leipzig, as well as violin. After studying mathematics and humanities at the University of Leipzig, Bach accepted positions as organist, first in Dresden and then in Halle. In his fifties he relocated to Berlin, where he spent the final two decades of his life. Bach composed for small groups and the orchestra of his day, besides organ and piano. He is closest in temperament and style to J. S. Bach of all the latter's sons. His music lies in the Baroque tradition of harmonic elegance. More an able musician than an unusually gifted one, Wilhelm Freidemann is overshadowed by his brothers, Carl Philipp Emanuel and especially Johann Cristoph Friedrich and Johann Christian . ~Douglas Purl

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach
Wilhelm Friedemann Bach ( ) was the eldest, and by common repute the most gifted son, of Johann Sebastian Bach ; a famous organist, a famous improvisor, and a complete master of counterpoint Unlike the rest of the family, he was a man of idle and dissolute habits, whose career was little more than a series of wasted opportunities. Educated at Leipzig , he was appointed in organist of St. Sophia's Church at Dresden , and in became musical director of the Liebfrauenkirche at Halle . The latter office he was compelled to resign in , and thenceforward he led a wandering life until, on the 1st of July , he died in great poverty at Berlin . His compositions, very few of which were printed, include many church cantatas and instrumental works, of which the most notable are the fugues , polonaises and fantasias for clavier , and an interesting sestet for strings, clarinet and horns. Several of his manuscripts are preserved in the Royal library at Berlin; and a complete list of his works, so far as they are known, may be found in Eitner’s Quellen Lexikon Adapted from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach
Wilhelm Friedemann Bach was the second child, the oldest son, of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach. He was born in Weimar on November 22, 1710, and when he was no longer a child he passed into a strong musical instruction program. He was trained by his father in musical theory, composition, and playing organ, violin, harpsichord, and clavichord. His father also wrote for him many now-famous instruction pieces, for example The Well-tempered Klavier and Inventions . In 1723, the Bach family moved to Leipzig, and Bach became enrolled at the Thomas Schule. Then, he went to the University of Leipzig, where he graduated in 1729. During this time, he composed music, including a couple of keyboard concerti that demonstrated his ability to create music. In 1733 Bach became the organist at the St. Sophia Church in Dresden, because in the competition for the post his playing was so vastly superior no others stood a chance. He held this position for thirteen years, and composed a great deal of music. Bach also was raised high in the social life of the area, so because of his musical gifts. After leaving the post in Dresden, Bach went to Halle, becoming organist for the Liebfrauen Kirchen. For eighteen years, ending in 1764, he performed on the organ and conducted the orchestra in great distinction. On May 12, 1764 Bach resigned from this post, claiming that he was not sufficiently recognised there. For the next few years, he lived a dangerous life, hoping to get money where he could. He gave organ recitals, taught music, and composed music to sell to wealthy patrons. But with all this work, he barely made enough to get by for himself and his family. The last years of his life were disappointing and bitter, and he died in Berlin on July 1, 1784, leaving his wife and daughter in poverty.

Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann
The eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann was born in 1710 in Weimar and was taught by his father, after 1723, when the family moved to Leipzig, becoming a pupil at the Thomasschule. He spent four years at the University of Leipzig, before finding employment as organist at the Sophienkirche in Dresden and subsequently, with unhappy results, at the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle. From 1764 until his death twenty years later he held no official position, although he had been widely recognised as one of the most distinguished organists of his time and had mastered very thoroughly the lessons taught him by his father. His own tendency to the freedom of thought of the Enlightenment had not endeared him to his Pietist superiors in Halle and independence of character rendered him gradually less employable, within the restrictive circumstances of his time. Keyboard Music W.F.Bach wrote a number of harpsichord sonatas, fantasias and shorter dance pieces. His contrapuntal command was shown in a series of fugues that also reflect something of his known distinction in organ improvisation. His Concerto for two harpsichords combines the Baroque and the newly developing classical style of his time. Orchestral Music Bach left a number of harpsichord concertos and sinfonias.
