Georges Auric (1899-1983) - French yet very English:
As a young musician, Auric became friends with Erik Satie , he studied under D'Indy and attended the Paris Conservatory. He became a member of the group known as "Les Six" including Milhaud, Poulenc, Honegger, Tailleferre and Durey. He was a music critic for a time and of course a composer. His early works were largely in a classical vein, for concert performances, opera and ballet. His membership of Lex Six brought him into contact with Jean Cocteau (at that time a playwright) and that relationship led to writing settings of poetry and other texts as songs and musicals. When Cocteau turned to film making, it was natural that Auric would also turn to film music. He wrote soundtracks for a large number of French films before finding work across the Channel which quickly led to his becoming the resident composer for the series of films commonly known as the "Ealing Comedies" after the studio which produced them. Since these films are widely known and fondly remembered among English speakers, the name of Auric is most closely associated with these films and this is why we have dubbed Auric "French yet very English". These films included the likes of "Passport to Pimlico", "The Lavender Hill Mob" and "The Titfield Thunderbolt" starring actors like Alistair Sim and Alec Guinness. With "Moulin Rouge", Auric had the opportunity to portray his native country in an English-language film, and also wrote the successful song for this movie "Where is your Heart".

Georges Auric, Film Music Vol. 4 GEORGES AURIC Marco Polo 8.225136 18 tracks - 59:33 In his early days, Georges Auric was a member of "Les Six," a group of French composers attempting to create a new approach to music and art in the 1920s. Basically, the group wanted to streamline music by removing the heavy chromatic writing of Wagner (who was a heavy influence over French composers at the beginning of the 20th century) and the influence of Debussy. The result was really the roots of neo-Classical composition and even minimalism, in that they returned to an 18th century concept of harmonic movement while using repetitive cells of music. That is not to imply that the music is devoid of interest; in fact, the opposite is true because added to this "new" style was a rhythmic development influenced by American Jazz, and also played with musical form. Jean Cocteau was a patron of this new music and is indelibly linked to the French avant garde of the 1920s. Auric collaborated with him on six films, including

Alberto Cavalcanti/Charles Crichton/Basil Dearden/Robert Hamer, 1945) at Ealing. He trained at the Paris Conservatoire, and under the composer Vincent D'Indy at the Schola Cantorum. He composed his first film score, Le sang d'un po¨te ( Blood of a Poet , France, d. Jean Cocteau), in 1931, after working prolifically in other musical fields, including ballet. His early scores include those for such famous French films as A nous la libert© (France, d. Ren© Clair, 1931). In England, he composed the score for eight further Ealing films, as varied as It Always Rains on Sunday (d. Robert Hamer, 1947), Cage of Gold (d. Basil Dearden, 1950) and The Titfield Thunderbolt (d. Charles Crichton, 1953), as well as notable scores for the films of other companies, including Silent Dust (d. Lance Comfort, 1949, a typically stirring melodramatic score), The Queen of Spades (d. Thorold Dickinson, 1949), and The Innocents (d. Jack Clayton, 1961). He continued to compose for French films in the postwar decades, scoring such classics as Du rififi chez les hommes (
