It brings up self-image problems, objectification, sexualization of young girls, pregnancy, sexual abuse, and (almost) lesbianism. Looking at that list, you might think that Sally Field's directorial debut is really amazing, daring to tackle almost every big concern for gender and sexual politics. But it's not amazing and not daring. In fact, it's damn safe. Beautiful never gets past being skin deep. Written by Jon ( Ringmaster ) Bernstein, Beautiful And while we're on the subject of things girly, Mona's pregnancy is very conveniently disappeared from the plot. For a movie that defines itself as a "bold, female-powered film," this omission might bring pause. To maintain her pageant eligibility, Mona had to hide her "condition" for several months. Why, in such a "female-powered film," are such a profound event and circumstances never addressed? Perhaps, like Mona, the movie is just too intensely focused pageants to deal with such life details. Indeed, it's not long after Eisenberg is introduced as Vanessa that Mona qualifies for the Miss American Miss pageant and Ruby is incarcerated. That's right, I said incarcerated. It seems that in keeping with Ruby's role as Mother Extraordinaire, she works in a home for the elderly and unfortunately, one of her patients dies from a drug overdose, leaving Ruby as the prime suspect.

Contact Jane Adams My intellectual and academic career has focused on the encounter between people who live in rural regions and expanding, industrializing states and societies. My ethnographic and historical research focuses on rural North America, particularly the region included within the Mississippi Delta - from Southern Illinois southward. This work has resulted in three books and numerous articles, with another book in preparation. In 2000 I began a long-term project on peoples' memories of, and judgments about, the massive transformations of the post-World War II period in the lower Mississippi Delta. With my husband, photographer D. Gorton , I have returned to Mississippi, where we participated in the Freedom Movement in the 1960s. We are using digital video to interview and film in the field.
