b. 1932
Millay Songs was written in 1977 and is available from American Composers Alliance. There are two versions, one for high voice, the other for medium voice and piano. There songs are perhaps the finest of Adams' considerable catalog. The beautiful melodies of the voice are firmly supported by a piano accompaniment that is keenly reflective of the text. Millay's texts are, for the most part, melancholic. They express sentiments of the tedium of daily life, lost love, and lost opportunities. The penultimate song, "The Return From Town," is shocking in its contrast to the previous three songs. It, too, speaks of opportunities lost, but does so almost as a matter of jest (the text says, succinctly, "I saw someone fair. I ignored him and went into my own house. There I already have a handsome husband.") Picturesque is the best word one may use to describe the piano treatment of these songs. Much like the songs of Schumann, the piano intercedes to complete fragments of thoughts where words fail. A fine pianist himself, Adams is very specific with markings. The voice part is written with sensitivity for the expressive powers of a lyric instrument. Decidedly, this composer knows how to maximize effects possible from singers. On high notes, time is given for the blossoming of tone. Lines are written for the voice in such a way as to encourage vowel-to-vowel singing, the framework necessary for true legato. There are some complexities here that will require specific attention if a unified ensemble is to prevail. The level of difficulty for this work is medium to medium high. It is a gratifying piece to perform.

1. I chose this career because...

I c hose to become a pharmacist because I have always had a strong interest in biology. It seemed natural for me to gravitate toward a career as a pharmacist. Pharmacy offered me the opportunity to focus on human biology and drugs used to cure or manage specific diseases. It also gave me the opportunity to learn more about new and existing drugs and their effects on humans.
After I finished my graduate degree, I did a one-year residency program at John Hopkins. Though a residency is not required for many programs, it is a favorable training practice for those who anticipate working in a hospital. A residency also gives you a way to specialize. Pharmacy has a number of specialties from which to choose, like veterinary sciences, infectious diseases, critical care, psychology, and ambulatory care. I am a clinical research pharmacist, and spend a lot of time working with investigational drugs that may eventually be considered for approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

at the
Lesbian/Gay Center of Greater Cleveland.
Part II of a series (begun May 21) in which Adams discusses CD, "Twelve Etudes" [Maria Corley, pianist]. ( www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001DMUCC/ ) and his life and career as free-lance composer. He also shares a context for his creativity through philosophical beliefs.
Part I emphasized his background and music through CD excerpts. The presentation was warmly received and the discussion was rich. Special attendees were David Hunter, noted area metaphysician and consultant and Phyllis Asnien, Prof., Lakeland College. Points covered were the creative process, the evolvement of the arts in general, and comparison of music to other art forms. Everything from "existentialism" to "Andrew Wyeth's paintings" (specifically "Christiana's World") were touched upon by attendees. Folks put on their thinking caps and dug into substantive discourse.
Part II deals with how Adams' beliefs are carried out in his music with examples from his CD. A question and answer period follows with ample time for group comments and discussions.

Leslie Adams CD Review
A Review: Leslie Adams' Songs Rarely does one hear a perfect match of singer, pianist, and repertoire. Love Rejoices, a new compact disk containing a rich assortment of the masterful songs composed by Leslie Adams has that magic. The program contains the complete song groups Nightsongs, The Wider View, as well as exerpts from Five Millay Songs and selected individual songs. Poets include Edna St. Vincent Millay, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Joette McDonald, Langston Hughes, and Georgia Douglas Johnson. The Adams songs are beautifully crafted. This composer knows what musical line is all about and sets his texts with love of words and musical technique to match the poetry. The piano parts are at once intricate and a perfect matach for the nuances of text. Darryl Taylor's rich tenor and Ms. GuyÕs sensitive accompanying meld perfectly. Mr. Taylor knows how to change his timbre from warm and luxurious to moody and dark, from very rhythmic to liquid. This is a wonderful listening experience. David Powers tells us that the disk [CD, Albany Records, Catalog 428] can be ordered from Educator's Music, (216) 226-6780. Printed songs (in three keys) can also be purchased at Educator's Music.
