CLINICAL TOXICOLOGY REVIEW Clinical Toxicology Review is published monthly by the Massachusetts Poison Control System Vol. 18, No. 8 May 1996 PODOPHYLLIN Podophyllin is a resin mixture obtained from the dried rhizome and roots of the common plants Podophyllin peltatum (Mayapple or Mandrake) and Podophyllin emodi , which are grown in North America and the Himalayas, respectively. Early American colonists learned of podophyllin from Native Americans who believed the drug to be an effective antidote when applied to snake bites. Since that time podophyllin also has been used as a poison, a cathartic (Carter's Pills), an antithelminthic, and a local antifungal. Interest in podophyllin was renewed in 1942 when Kaplan introduced the use of topical podophyllin in the management of condyloma acuminatum. Today, podophyllin continues to be used worldwide as the first-line treatment for condyloma acuminatum in spite of numerous reports indicating that more efficacious and less toxic therapies exist. Podophyllin also continues to be found in certain cathartic herbal preparations.
