Research
We study the effects of environmental pollutants on developing organisms. The main focus of the laboratory is on the effects of pollutants on the early embryo, in general, with an additional emphasis on the effects of pollutants on the nervous system throughout the embryonic period. Since we are studying environmentally relevant chemicals, we are interested in both animals exposed in the wild, generally to a mixture of environmental pollutants, and laboratory models exposed under controlled laboratory conditions in order to verify the field results and in order to better characterize the underlying mechanisms.
Major Research Areas
  • Evaluation of the effects of dioxins (and other environmentally-related pollutants) on early embryonic avian development. These projects entail both general microscopic evaluation and analysis as well as immunohistochemical and histochemical techniques to evaluate biochemical and/or molecular changes induced by dioxin exposure.
  • Evaluation of the effects of dioxins (and related chemicals) on avian behavior (in laboratory conditions). This project entails exposing avian embryos to dioxins throughout embryonic development and analyzing behavioral changes in the hatchlings. A range of behavioral techniques are used to assess a range of potentially effected behaviors.

Historically, the roots of pharmacology go back to ancient civilizations that used plants and plant extracts as treatments and as poisons. Pharmacology investigates the mechanisms by which drugs act on living systems. Scientists that specialize in pharmacology are pharmacologists. They integrate the information of many scientific disciplines including chemistry cell biology and physiology in order to solve drug and chemical-related problems that affect human health. A working knowledge of pharmacology is also important to the practice of all medical professionals including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dentists and veterinarians. Pharmacology coursework is required for each of these disciplines.

As mandated by CERCLA, the Division (1) identifies the priority hazardous substances found at National Priority List (NPL) sites, (2) prepares toxicological profiles for these listed and ranked NPL hazardous substances, and (3) ensures the initiation of research designed to determine the health effects of substances for which information is currently considered inadequate. As a part of an Agency-wide HazDat database effort, the Division is responsible for coordinating the integration of the aforementioned information into HazDat.
